How good are your eyes?

I just been to IT department in College i used to go to. I just noticed that all 8 or so members of staff there were wearing glasses. Is it to do with them working in front of their computers 8 hours a day? I spend quite a bit of time staring at my monitor myself. Im also planning to start a new Internet Management and Web Design HND course in uni this year. Should i reconsider my career? I really dont feel like losing my vision. Or is it just a coincidence?

 

Well my vision is perfect and I've been working with my PC for 10 years now on the internet.

I've had no problems thus far, and really don't see any problems that I may endure with my vision in the near future.

So, there is no need to be worried or paranoid. Maybe they're just your average little computer nerds with glasses, freckles, and pocket protectors.

 

Very bad vision, but only in my left eye. Nothing to do with computers, its always been like that since I was really young. Somthing about the brain selectively ignores input it recieves from my left eye because my right eye was a little better, and this gradually made my left eye even worse. I had to wear a "pirate" patch for two years.

 

lol i was getting worried there... I guess with monitors getting better and breaks between working sessions i should be fine.

 

i dont think wearing a glass has anything to do with poor vision.
they might wearing simple AR glasses (Anti Radiation).
I used to wear AR glasses once while working on computer untill i learned that modern day's monitors are non-interlaced and do not affect eyes much.

 

lol i dubt it. They would have been all the same then. Thats a good point though. Vise versa people can wear contacts and you would never know they have poor eyes.

 

Poor monitors can effect your eye vision.

 

sitting in front of computer may cause dryness but it won't affect your eye sight. It's a myth that your eye sight will get poor if you sit too much in front of computer/tv. But still it will affect for people above 40. Continous dryness in your eyes is not a good thing and you shud use eye drops

I have very poor vision and I am wearing eye glasses since childhood. Probably will go for lasik if doctor allows

 

I've been working with computers for more than 20 years... Back when I started I used a lot of VDT's, with low resolution and awful colors. I started getting headaches and had a hard time seeing at night, especially when I was driving. So I went for an exam, the eye doctor said that the constant computer use was destroying my vision. At one point I had two different pairs of glasses to wear, one for when I was working and another for the rest of the day. Now I wear bifocals, and I'm guessing that since monitors have gotten better my vision has stopped declining as quickly as it was.

Then again, that doctor could've been a quack, my parents and grandparents all wore glasses.

 

I've been using computers heavily for 2-3 years. My eyesight has suffered a lot, and I now need glasses *but* only when driving. It's annoying a lot of the time, but I guess I'll get contact lenses or laser eye pretty soon.

So the monitor is 100% to blame (noone else wears glasses in my family and I don't watch too much TV), but I'm not going to stop using a computer to wait for my eyes to catch up.

 

I've been a heavy computer user since 11 years ago. Still not needing any glasses yet. So I'll say heavy usage definitely does not equal having to wear glasses.

 

Monitors could damage your eye sight, i recommend using an anti glare screen if you are using a CRT or keep the brightness/contrast ration of your monitor/tft a little low, so that it is gentle on your eyes.

I worked for around 10 hours a day for around 8 years, and i now wear glasses (just in front of computer, it starts getting itchy after 3-4 hours if i am not wearing 'em). I learned the lesson hard way.

 

For some reason i can see very good. I spend ALOT of time on my computer and my brother says im going to go blind someday but i can see better than him. Its weird.

 

I guess it also depends on how you use it, how many breaks you take, whether you stare at one spot or move your eyes around the screen, your rooms lighting etc...

 

Heh, you keep mentioning breaks? I've never taken a break for the purpose of taking a break. I also don't care about the lighting and (unless it's sunny) it's normally dim or darkish. I think it varies a lot from person to person like most things, some people will be able to spend 50 years with heavy computer usage and be pretty fine, others need glasses from birth.

Also, I thought my eyes were fine until I started driving lessons, the first time I went to the opticians and they kitted me out with some glasses I couldn't believe what I was seeing (hehe), this might be the case for some of you.

 

erm...i did that really intelligent thing of staring up at the eclipse .... (was about 7 years ago) and i can still see it.

I am kinda used to it now, and fortunately it only etched itself onto one retina

 

Dont you read PC games manual? It tells you to rest for 10/15 minutes per hour

I've been sitting infront of a computer in one way or another since 1988.
- I started with a hercules monitor (2 color) which was not too bad. -
- Then came the HORRIBLE cga monitors which killed my eyes. -
- I went through to the 256 color VGA monitor, which was better than the CGA but still a bit rough, that's the 1st time I had a filter on the monitor itself.
- Next was a 17" SVGa which was a life saver.
- Now I'm sitting on a 21" CRT monitor at 100MHz which is not too bad at all.

As far as the eyes go, for the last 5 or so years my eyes have been burning quite a bit. I went to an optometrist and he said that my eyes are fine but very dry, this is due to the fact that when you sit infront of a monitor, you tend to blink MUCH less than normally, he prescribed eye drops. The next guy I went to , I specifically asked for 'computer glasses', these suckers have a .5 correction and a special anti glare filter. I now have two pairs, one at work and one at home. They are serious life savers.
I seriously advise you to get some, they will make looking at a monitor MUCH easier.

Also you should NEVER sit facing a wall, you should be able to see far past your monitor, I usually have it infront of a window, so I can look at the preety green world out there.

And my next big PC investment will be a LCD screen, those are very easy on the eyes.

 

neither did i mate...spent a whole childhood staring at the sun, even looked thru binoculars once i was invincible once.... and then i looked at the eclipse... oops!

not so bad now i has healed itself somewhat but there's still a blur right in the center of my left eye vision, i have adapted to periferal vision in my left eye...whih sounds weird, but i guess i am just used to it now. From where i am sitting, I can make the green 'signed in' dot disappear if i stare at it with my left eye.....

 

Yeah, the worlds economy would cripple if that was an enforced law.

And Solicitors_Mortgages, you won't be able to enjoy the new 3D television screens (which are awesome by the way) if both your eyes don't work correctly
