How long does it take to get noticed?

    Hi all,

As a relative newbie to the site I was just wondering how long it took you in general, writers especially to get noticed and start making money taking on jobs advertised through the site?

Having browsed through several of the forums I find that I am taken aback by the amount that some people want to pay for the work that they need, and indeed find it insulting in many cases. Yet there are some people offering their services at a rate that can not be viable for financial sustainability and leaves me wondering what kind of quality their work delivers.

I suppose I am looking to hear about success stories or times you may have had your fingers burned in the content creation marketplace, information that I can bear in mind for the future.

    Thanks guys :)

I wouldn't bother looking for writing work on forums. You may get lucky and find a high paying client, but for the most part the fees on offer are insulting. Somebody on here today was asking for UK writers to write 500 word articles for $1.50 per article... and they wanted a writing sample. At those rates you would be better off flipping burgers in McDonalds for minimum wage.

I agree with you. I was referred here by a friend who also writes for a living and she claimed to have received a lot of work through the site. Looking at the pay rates I'm not convinced its worthwhile. $1.50 for 500 words is incredibly insulting, they seem to forget that no matter what we write about a certain amount of research and time is required in order to produce a quality product.

the problem is that there are many accepting those fees. And probably they earn a good amount of money monthly, but working like a beaver. not something I would like to do, anyway, because creative work should be rewarded and not treated this way.

I agree, it takes all of the pleasure out of what for all intents and purposes should be an enjoyable job.

A very poor quality, at times. I am all for developing a clientele, but if someone systematically lowers their prices so that they could stand above the crowd, then it does a huge disservice to everyone else. I am wondering if DP should have suggested rates for those who are offering those types of services (for instance: you cannot charge less than $XX for XXX amount of words). Then the buyers will have to choose among the people that have the highest reputation as opposed to the lowest prices.

I have read several posts from people looking for writers but asking for Asian writers as they say they will not pay the prices that European writers charge for the work that they need. All of this cheap and often nonsensical content gives hard working, quality focussed writers a bad name.
Pricing guidelines would probably have been a good idea if they had been put in place at the sites conception, it's probably far too late to change things now.
