What motivated you to learn some Sanskrit? Was it for religious or academic purposes?

Sanskrit, is the parent language for most of the Indo-European, as well as a large number of the Asian, south Asian and South East Asian languages.

Just as over the last 3,000 years, the Greek and the Latin cultures have influenced an area far wider that the countries of their origin, almost 10,000 years ago, the influence of the Sanskrit language and of the Vedic culture had spread far and wide, from Northern Europe to as far away as the Bhasa in Indonesia.

One of the best examples for this is the word "Sthan" which is a Sanskrit word for "the place of" so Afghanistan (originally Afghanisthan) was "the place of the Afghans" or "where the Afghans live" similarly, Kazakhstan (originally Kazakhsthan) was "the place where the Kazakhs live" and so on.

An easy to follow example of the ancient global footprint of the Sanskrit language are the Sanskrit words Matru & Pitru, which are of course the "seed words" for Mater & Pater (old English), Mutter & Vater (German) Moder & Fader (Swedish) and so on.

Not sure if it is still the case over there now, but long ago when I was at Heidelberg, Sanskrit was an essential component for a course in the Classic German.

I believe that language is the DNA of Human civilization and so I find the history of languages and thus of culture around the world utterly fascinating!

If you speak English it's enough. Forget the others. I know French but it's not important. I also have a native language Turkish it's also a garbage, no use. So English is the only true language. Because it works anytime anywhere. Who cares if you speak 100 languages if you don't speak English?

I am based in Austria, so, naturally, German. I however grew up bilingual, my second first language is English. Other than that I have a very basic knowledge of Spanish but not anywhere near enough to use it for writing.
