I did a search, it said they charge by hour? Something like $50 per-hour, but how many page is that, or it depends. How much does a 5 page website cost to make on average?

It varies dramatically, depending on the complexity of the work and the quality of work the web designer offers. You might find some fresh meat (like a student) looking for something to ad to their portfolio who might be willing to do a job for next to nothing, or it may cost you $300/hr. It really depends on what you need.

Your best bet would be to write out exactly what your looking for, like # of pages, and coding or database work, flash, java, or other requirements. Then, ask for people to make you offers for the work.

Totally depends on what the consultation process is and what the website is for.

I have one friend that meets the client, discusses the project, designs and makes the website all on his own. He charges per page, and then per hour for updating the website in the future. You can get a website from him for a few hundred dollars

I have another friend that has a website design business. He sends a consultant to meet the client, they make a detailed plan for the project, a designer designs the look and feel and that is signed off by the client. The project goes to the development / production team for building, then it goes through two weeks testing. The client is able to update the website themselves and receives training, manuals and phone support. They get gifts on the anniversary of their site going live and have a dedicated account manager to help grow their online business. The client is charged for a package rate, plus an hourly rate for any extra features they require that are unique to their online business. Basic package rate starts at about $5000

[edit] - damn it, I hate it when others answer the question before I post my answer :)

I have no affiliation but you could try posting a project HERE. You might get your best price there. You could also try asking on this forum HERE. There are many talented individuals right here at DP who could do the work for you, I'm sure. :)

I hate this question, although it is a good one

If the developer is using notepad to create a site, they'll charge you alot if you're paying them by hour!

Make sure they are not using a 486, it'll cost you even more ...

yeah have worked for reasonably reputable companies in my area, i cant design to save my life, but most decent ones arround here charge about $80 an hour. Based where I am alot of the companies ehre can charge less than the makor cities too due to the reduced wages so i would imagine in london the hourly price could easily be 50% more

Before you hire a web designer, research what kind of site you want.

For example, what will the color scheme be? How many pages?, What will the logos look like? The more concrete you can get it, the easier it will be for the designer to understand what you want.

As for me personally, I charge people $30 an hour and ask for $75 to start a project.

Hi, if you are ready to do the website at free of cost many people will approach you. You may not be able to meet everybody requirement. If you are not taking money for your works client has to accept whatever shit you design. Client may feel guilty to ask for corrections or modification because it is free service.....Client will accept everything because it is free.....he will host his web site without any correction because it is free.......nobody show intrest to have a look at his website because it is a shit........you may not be able to meet client's deadlines because you are doing a favoure to him. Client won't bullshit you because it is freee....

Free services have its own disadvatages.

I've paid as little as $100 for a website... to as much as $1,000.

The one for $100 was a two page static site. Now I can do these on my own for the most part.

The one for $1,000 was a dating site with a lot of programming involved.

I also once paid $400 for a custom rating site.

For a static seven - ten pages html site $5000 too high. Charges should be reasonable. We should not loot client's treasure. I feel anything between $800to $1000 justified for seven - ten static html pages.
