How much do you charge for SEO?

Hi - just a theoretical question here.

Say you're going to do some SEO for a client - billing hourly. The work would include website design and modification, link building through emails, and monitering of rankings. This would be ongoing for quite a while. There would also be a few people working under me, 2-4.

What's the general ballpark number for an hourly rate?

    Thanks,
    Jake

$200-$800 seems to be what most people charge.

Isn't this considered price fixing though? You're supposed to charge what you think the value is. Not what others charge.

It depends on your reputation and the level of service you provide.

We charge substantially more than $800.

I never work hourly - calculate the cost to yourself of putting your resources together and putting them into play, plus additional resources required to expand the campaign - factor in the fact that things are always more complicated than you initially imagine, and also consider from experience what you see as the likely timeline of success in the market being targeted, with regards to its competitiveness.

It can all add up, but really it depends on what you're aiming to achieve - general search engine friendliness vs 100 commercially important top ten rankings, for example.

First job I ever took I undercharged for, but you raise your prices by experience.

A very dynamic industry, though, and getting harder to start I should imagine - best of luck with it.

Also an important factor is the country. If the economy is low you cannot charge more. For example if the montly salary in that country is 200 USD you cannot charge 1000 USD : because you will not have clients :)

sometimes it also depends on the desired keywords, their expectations and their budget.

Some of them want to see immediate results, be prepared for an answer for that. For page optimization, it's ok to quote per price or by hour. If they want to see results in the search engines, quote wisely.

    How Much!!!!!!

Good grief...... I wouldn't touch anything less than $100/hour and that would have to be simple.

A car garage for a mechanic gets that sort of money!!!!:p

I no longer work on commission. My evolution in this ever-changing career has taken me to a fixed rate/monthly/12 month minimum. I no longer want to be married to gigantic sites and sit at the round table of rejected learning each morning.

To remain a free spirit I have chosen to take sites to an elevated level (hair pull out) and then turn them over to real professionals. I don’t mess around with price because I prefer my underlings do all the work, so I can drink Corona beer with a wedge of lime on a hot Florida day - Price

My fee is $225,000 per year (paid in 12 installments) which includes 3 people at your beck and call. Owner of site is responsible for all expenses incurred at development of site which include: Cost of links, Server expense, programming specialist for intricate work, and a few others (this is not a joke). We will handle all publicity, press and article data, scheduling of back-links, link partnerships, news press ads, TV ads, and the like. Only very serious managers/owners should inquire. We only have room for one more client at this time. We guarantee nothing -

That is a hell of a lot for consultancy work (Which is essentially what it is if everything else the client wants he has to pay for himself)...

So you say, give me 250k. I won't guarantee that I can actually do anything for you, and the only thing I am offering is consultancy and technical changes to your site (Do you do that even)...

I would expect more from 250k (IMO).

But hey, it you get work, best of luck...

We're all talking the same language here - to make it worth while you have to take, on average, $150/hour, especially if you are doing complex stuff
