    Advertising (learn more)

Advertise virtually anything here, with CPM banner ads, CPM email ads and CPC contextual links. You can target relevant areas of the site and show ads based on geographical location of the user if you wish.

Starts at just $1 per CPM or $0.10 per CPC.

How much is too much at first?

I'm pretty new to the whole Adsense world and could use some expert advice. I've been doing some research and found a few sites that suggested you should try to build up some traffic first before putting any advertising on your website as this will help build up credibility and will most likely improve your chances of return visitors. With that in mind, I'm thinking about maybe just a 1 unit fo a little while. Just wondering if anyone else has any thoughts/experiences on this.

I have built up my site and traffic without any ads. I am getting 5000-6000 unique visitors per day, so I might set up ads soon.

Provide your users with something to come back to and just place the ads in places where it doesn't seem spammy. There doesn't need to be a "1 ad block" limit... just don't overdo it by putting three large rectangle ad blocks next to each other and stuff. You know what I mean? Goodluck :).

Also: It shouldn't matter when you put up ads IMO. People aren't going to know if you have 1,000,000 visitors or 10 visitors. You can put them on now or later, I don't think it makes that much of a difference... to me it just depends on WHERE you put them, not when.

Putting ads earlier gives you motivational boost when you see your first income. :)

The whole point of not putting up ads in the beginning is to get a good reputation as a website so people would want to link to it and tell others about it. Nobody links to spammy sites. Nobody tells their friends about spammy sites. Nobody diggs or stumbles spammy sites.

If your visitors get accustomed to no-ads design, it might shock them if you put them on later.

Well, luckily I have a site where visitors generally only come back to it to show their friends. :)

My opinion is the cliche saying "Quality over Quantity".

If you have quality spaces, quantity will follow.

thing is, if you're only 100 or less visitors per day, you arent really going to make any money (usually) - and even if you do, it is at the expense of sending visitors away..

Well, I believe you can easily achieve eCPM of 10$, but in my country and my language it is rather difficult. So this site with 100 visitors would probably give you a buck or so daily.

If you can't get more visitors, make them stay at your site as long as you can. If each of them views two pages instead of the one he came to (whatever the refering source was) you get twice the ads impressions, probably the same ads CTR and thus twice the site eCPM.

To achieve that you need to have quality content and useful site navigation, e.g. "related articles" at the end of each article.
