How much to tip the Pizza guy?

OK, I like to eat out at nice restaurants. I like to spend money on all the extras, drinks, dessert, after dinner drink, dessert drink, etc - I end up spending a decent amount of money and one thing I do is tip very well

    but...

My lady just got on to me about tipping the delivery guy - she said I was being a cheap tipper, was 2 to 4 bucks cheap? - I tipped the pizza guy 2 bucks tonight and last night, I tipped the chinese take out kid 4 bucks - not that he was better, all I had on me in cash tonight was 2 bucks.

Well, she said I was being a cheap tipper - the way I see it, I am not getting great service, he is not pouring my Merlot for me, he's just delivering a box full of carbs - and he gets paid better for doing that than your average waitress at Chili's

    Your thoughts on this?

I think we should give back what we get. Therefore, we should take one slice out and give to him. Then, all delivery drivers will be very well fed. Long live the well fed pizza delivery guys!!

I usually tip the pizza dude 3-5$ depending on how much the bill is (and how much change is made).

There's one kid that delivers it w/ the cheese slid all over the place. He gets $2...though he really should get $0!

Well, considering that gas costs so damn much, I would definitely throw the pizza guy a few bucks.

To be honest, I never tip people. I don't see the point. Over 50% of people work in the service industry in prety much any developed country, all of us recieve the salary we should based on our experience, abilities, etc. It's not like the pizza man doesn't get a salary, he's just the same as everyone else. So why is it that only these people get tipped? My girlfriend works in a government office helping people all the time, earning a salary far worse than the pizza man, why not tip her? Why not tip the mechanic? Why not tip the door guard? Where does it stop?

I tip whatever the change is from the big bill I hand over. I.e. if the pizza costs $14 and I have a $20, he gets $6. If the pizza costs $19 and I have a $20, well screw'em, he gets a $1. Hell, he's getting paid anyways, why do I gotta pay him extra? :D

As Mister Pink would say: "I don't tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them something a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doing their job."

I take you have never worked in the food industry. First off, servers usually make LESS than minimum wage as a salary (around 2 something I think, could be wrong). This is legal to pay them this salary because of the tips they make (and must claim). Think about that the next time you stiff a server in a restaurant. Pizza delivery drivers make minimum wage. Who in their right mind would bring you a pizza putting countless miles on their vehicle (thus lowering the vehicles value) and burning 3.00 a gallon gas for minimum wage. You ought to be ashamed of yourself for not tipping these people.

Personally, i don't give out tips to the waiters, delivry guys, etc. i mean why do give tip? that's their job! that's what their suppose to be doing. I just give out tip when i think they are giving me service out of their scope of support :)

Ha! Look, I agree you should tip them something, but telling him he should be "ashame" because he doesn't like to tip is going a tad overboard. The man's going out for dinner, he's already going to have to pay for a big bill, and now he has to "chip in" on someone else's salary too??? Give me a break.

You know that going in to the meal. It's not like it's some kind of trap sprung on you. You should have enough sense to know to tip your server.

Um, yeah, I was using the waiter thing as an anology. (I think I've already said that I always tip, but I'm defending the guy's right not to tip if he so chooses.) Sure, it was a sucky anology, but one nevertheless.

Well, I will only add this, and I bet everyone here can attest to this. You can tell alot about the character of a person by the way he/she treats a server at a restaurant. Truly.

Only if PortProphecy is eating there. Then he/she will be sure to make everyone else in the restaurant feel so guilty that they'll tip enough to buy the guy a house. :D

Compensated well? These people make BELOW miminum wage. The government allows restaurants to only have to pay servers a base of around 2.15/hour. Tell me honestly, would you work for $2.15/hour? You are insulting these people by stiffing them on the tip. I have worked in the food industry. Trust me. They hate you.

Don't be ridiculous. I was in restaurant management for years. You were making minimum wage or higher, such as cashier or host or cook. I'm sure you weren't working in a position where tipping was part of your everyday salary (servers, waiters, bartenders, food delivery). I have worked with THOUSANDS of people in these positions that that require tips to live on, and have NEVER met one person say, "I don't expect tips, I should work well for 2 dollars an hour."
