How my placement affected my earnings

I run several sites. One of them, my flagship site, http://www.brainbucketmag.com used to show Adsense in the leaderboard, wide skyscraper, 250x250 box and the little text ad just under the navigation area.

All was well until about three months ago, when I got an email from Google that they would terminate my account and ban me for this type of content -> http://www.brainbucketmag.com/BikerBabeOfTheDay.html & http://www.brainbucketmag.com/Daily_Bikini_Babe.html & http://www.brainbucketmag.com/coppermine/displayimage/album=162/pos=0.html. They requested that I no longer show Google Ads on those types of pages. I immediately pulled them from those pages and replaced them with CPX Interactive network. Of course my site's direct advertisers' banners display on any page of my site, but I don't fill all of my inventory, so I rely on network ads to the unsold impressions.

Shortly after that I set up my news pages to show the 250x250 box ads, like so -> http://www.brainbucketmag.com/News/article/sid=1795.html. Right around that same time, my CPC went way down. It went down so much so that I could sell 10k impressions for $7.50, pay the Paypal fee and still make more than I was with Google. My CTR stayed relatively the same. I had officially been smartpriced!

It got so bad last week, that I was making more the CPX than I was with Google on the wide skyscrapers and coming pretty close to it with the leaderboards. I decided to start showing CPX skyscrapers over the entire site and disabled the Google skyscrapers altogether. Two days later, my CPC on leaderboards doubled and is close to being back to what it was before I was smartpriced!

I now make more showing Google leaderboards than I did showing Google leaderbaords and skyscrapers on the same page! Moral of the story: Ad saturation may lower your per ad earnings!

 

great tip mate, really good to hear this kinds of stories, I had a very similar situation, I ended up with just one google leaderboard, and my CPC and CTR are much higher than before when I had leaderboard + skyscraper
