    By doing market research. Are you trying to solve a problem with a product or service? If so head to the internet and start finding out as much as you can about the people who are having the problem you are wanting to solve. If there is a large amount of people experiencing the problem there is most likely going to be someone else who is trying to solve it for them. That is good news, not bad, because if they were actually solving the problem you wouldn't find anymore questions about it.

    Are you wanting to sell a product for discretionary purposes (i.e. clothing, shoes, electronics, games)? If so just start using the search engines to find out if people are really interested in your brand of offerings. Amazon is a great place to turn if to see what kind of demand there is for consumer products.

    You could use Google try the keyword tool see what the monthly searches are for what you are after, also look at other people are what they are doing in the business you want to get into.

    Do research like by reading news or any peoples lifestyle magazines, listen and observe people new trends. More demands on the subject or something, more profitable.
