How to market social networking site?

Discussion in 'Social Networks' started by headless, Jul 17, 2009.

Me and a few friends are midway through setting up a revolutionary new social networking website and we are starting to think about marketing, we have done the standard directory submission and word of mouth advertising. Does anyone know what sort of advertising works with this sort of website?? I was thinking about press releases but im not sure if they will be right for this sort of website??

    Hope someone can help.

    Thanks
    Kieran and the gang

Oh btw the website is www.socialepic.com if anyone wants to sign up to the launch site.

A press release won't hurt. Here's a list of 50 places to submit press releases for free.
Website No way affiliated with this site.

I would get on twitter and other social bookmarking sites and promote there. Go where the eyeballs are.. which in this case appears to be your competition, unfortunately.

I'd be glad to help out. I have a small blog where I post up interviews for upcoming blogs, social bookmarking, social networking, and web 2.0 websites. I'll PM you for further details, but it'd be some nice publicity.

Just do what Zoosk did for their dating site, just add an app to Facebook. Just kidding.

Lots of good ideas so far. Could you tell us a bit more about your site. This would help in generating more ideas.

I got a crazy question. How exactly do you market a site on Twitter? Let's say you have 100 followers, do you just post to those followers and ask them to post to all their followers? I'm very curious about this. Thanks.

You can use Facebook and MySpace. Each of these sites allow you to create a powerfully diverse and engaging web presence complete with photos, articles, and bookmarks. MySpace even provides the ability to ‘skin’ your profile! In other words you can actually brand it to make it totally unique; a powerful marketing capability
