    I know about directory submission, and that sort of thing.

    But what else should I do?

    You can't promote a social bookmarking site using directory submission.

    It needs to be viral, something that people will link to from their blogs.

    It looks banal, but I think... thats will be great, if users of social bookmarking sites find that there is a new place to post their bookmarks... Besides, company I work in just start creation of software of this kind. (social-expert.net, if you're interested in...)

    try to find some directories of bookmarking sites (might try wikipedia);
    except this, you may think about paying for the promotion of your site; there are now heaps of bookmarking sites, good luck.

    Maybe target a specific niche? Seems that it would be hard to break into the "general social bookmarking" idea but its very possible.

    use payperpost, spend like 1k to get ur site out there. It is a good way to promote, i bet. Make a buzz about your site.

    One tips>> get all your friends to register and participate in your social site.
