How to reduce the filesize of a JPG file?

I have copied some files from my digital camera. They are in .jpg format but their file size is very big. Each file is more than 1MB in size.

Is there any way to reduce the filesize of that jpg file?

You can save them with higher compression ratio, but this means some quality loss. Most free image browsers let you do it.

 

You can either:

• Reduce the resolution or
• Save them with higher compression, as Varelse mentioned

Ideally, you'd want to reduce the resolution first, and then the compression. You can save a few Kilobytes with virtually invisible compression if you're going from the source image. If you only have one or two, just drop me a PM and I'll re-size them for you.

 

Hey, I did it. Here is what I did.

I had an image with filesize 1.8MB

Step #1
Open that jpg file in Photoshop

Step #2
File > Save As > Select Jpg from the dropdown menu

Step #3
Set the Quality in JPEG Image Options at 1 (Low) and Format Options at Baseline (Optimized) and save the file.

Now the file size is only 140KB

The most important thing is that I didn't lose the quality. Both images are 100% same quality. You too can try that.

 

They are not the same quality, as JPG's compression causes an image to lose quality every time it's saved.
But the loss can be adjusted and with a good compression factor it's almost impossible to notice.
This is the most important part of re-compressing the photos - to watch the quality loss level very carefully.
