    1) from any domain registrar (like godaddy.com) you trust. How? Simply by fillinf out a form.

    2) depends on what it will host. If it's mainly text only you need a few megabytes. If you will offer software to download you'll need more. Make your site and save the files. Then select all and right click them to view properties and see how large the bundle is.

    3) depends on what you want to do. Advertising/retail etc.

Your hosting can cost whatever you can afford. For about $10 a month you´ll get lots of space and services plus if you shop around, the host will foot the bill for your new domain.

Do you have a topic that you are interested in? If you can find a domain name that reflects the topic then you are off to a good start.

Never ever ever let a host register your domain. Do it yourself, there is no need for a middle man. This service only benefits them when they want to leverage you into continuing to host with them in too many cases.

Avoid the trouble. directnic.com is a good service to register a domain.

You think so Noppid? I only ever have registered my own domains (and I use 123cheapdomains, which are cheap, cheerful and good customer service) but I am noseying around looking for a new domain/host set-up and found a couple of good looking hosting services that were offering to throw in the domain for a years hosting.

Hmm. Glad you stopped me there, then. Thanks, mate. Back to the drawing board.

Can I just ask how you work as a web designer without knowing these things?

I guess if you work in a huge web design department you might never get involved with these things. At uni everyone gets HTML lessons nowdays as well but they don't tell you those things asked above...

...though I'm wondering the same thing too :)

    DA,

My first experience with interent was client side, paying a web-designer to create a site for a restaurant. Next was overseeing the design and (lack of) Seo of a hotel website again client side. Later I was head of content development for a business portal which was very successful.

Altogether that was about four years of hanging around the internet and I knew what a domain was, bought a couple, played about with HTML etc., but it wasn´t until I really had some time on my hands and started my own website for real that I really learned about buying domains and hosting. Even now after being involved in the internet for almost a decade I am still learning - witness the exchange with Noppid above.

I can see how someone could be corralled in a short-sighted web company in such a way that they have to stick to their own task and are actively discouraged from learning new skills. Not a goood way to run a biz but quite common, I think.

I understand just what youre saying, but

    "my questions are
1)HOW TO REGISTER A DOMIAN FROM WHOM I SHOULD REGISTER A DOMAIN
2)HOW MUCH MINIMUMSPACE IS REQUIRED TO CREATE A WEBSITE?
3)AND HOW WILL I GET INCOME AFTER LAUCHING A SITE?"

    1) Try "domain registration" in any search engine, pick from one of the 0000000s
    2) How long's a piece of string ?
    3) Whats a piece of string?

I dont buy that 'they made sure I couldnt learn anything else' - If it was SEO, link pop, algos, 3d modelling.. but how do I earn money?

It looks to me that the thread says this:

Throw your ideas in here, if there is one I can take and am capable of handling I will use it. Please incude detail, it will make it less work for me ;) - No offence eagle.

Apparently this is not uncommon, but I agree a shockingly bad way to run a business.

I do the SEO for a web design co. I had to beg for DreamWeaver and am not allowed photoshop. I have a restraint of trade in my employeement contract and am actively discouraged from learning web design or coding. I can't contract or freelance my SEO skills.

I can see how someone can be keept in the dark by a draconian boss but I can't see why you don't ask your work mates these question or just Google for them.

Might be worth checking out http://www.wowdirectory.com/

They offer free hosting of a reasonable size plus a decent array of tools.
No advertising but you must have a link at the foot of your home page to wow directory.

Your questions are very general and can't really be answered without more information.

As for #1. I'd say to register at namecheap.com for a domain name, I find their interface is the easiest to use and I've used many of the registrars, I can't stand GoDaddy and RegFly is so damn slow and crashes my browser everytime. :(

#2. That depends. Some sites only use the bare minimum, 10mb's of space might do if you only have a few pages with text, then there's sites with lot graphics, file downloads, mp3's etc and they could use 500mb's of space and up. A new site doesn't usually use a lot of bandwidth right away. You could start off with a small hosting plan and then upgrade as your sites grows and expands.

#3. Income, that depends what method you use, if you're selling something, or making money off ads, I don't have a lot to say there as I am still learning all about it myself. I am only making money off my site because I offer a service. Haven't tackled the whole making money off ads and affiliates yet. :)
