If you were any good as a programmer 5 years ago then it will all come flooding back once you make a start. Taking time out for kids doesn't really fry your brain - it'll all be in there somewhere.

Get some hosting and put a blog or a CMS up (see www.opensourcecms.com to review your options) and mess about with some enhancements/addons/plugins - the term varies but it's basically little bits to make your site do more.

It would probably have been easier 5 years ago simply because the systems were simpler and people expected less - but you'll get the hang of it.

Regardless of which system you decide on you'll find it comes with a community attached who can answer questions and generally support you. And digitalpoint is full of useful and helpful people.

For what it's worth I'd start by looking at
    • WordPress - a simple blogging tool which can be used as a basic CMS
    • Joomla - more involved but writing components and modules is easier than for WordPress (in my opinion and I've done both)
    • CakePHP - a framework for creating a complete site - all the security and structure is built but you have to do the rest

    Freelancer what?

How do you see yourself making money?

**** Making websites with PPC advertising?

**** Creating websites for people who want them? (finding a buyer, like a local bussiness, and producing a site)

**** Programming Webtools and selling them to a mass audience? (like a CMS script or new software people can buy)

**** Writing an eBook and selling it?

**** Programming games for requests? (Companies who want a game -- like find-a-freelancer)

**** Programming games for sale on sites such as miniclip? (Like making any game, then selling it)

What do you want to do?

I think you should try freelancing sites first. A few of them are listed here.

Once you start earning from there, you can invest what you earned to build websites which has interesting topics for you.

But if you just want to use your free time to earn some extra money, you can use freelancing sites for programming, data entry or article writing projects.

And following these forums will help you to find new ways to go.. Because we are still learning here...!

I agree with itsall3 in this one. You need to see WHAT YOU can do. I don't program, but I design sites, create forum skins, write content. I make money by creating sites and also my ads revenue. If you can find a thing you like and can do, then it's easier.

Best of luck with the project ...

I myself was computer engineer so as you. I want to make one thing straight. Making Money Doesn't Happen Overnight. Everthing takes time but atleast you have to make an effort with a start. It would be handy if you learn PHP, Apache, Few MySQL queries and some SEO. It aint that hard. Should take just 1-2 months

For the start just order a low cost hosting plan and familiarize with Cpanel. Its just easy.

    1. Download XAMPP (Linux web server runs in windows). It comes with everything MySQL, Apache, PHP and setup a server on your PC. Test code in your server and later you can upload it.
    2. Download PHP and MySQL Manuals to your desktop for reference.
    3. Learn Some SEO Tutorials on Writing Titles & Content
    5. Get Readymade PHP Content Management Systems (CMS) which are available plenty and try to familiarise yourself installing in your server.

The above applies to you as computer guy. There are many type of jobs you can do like directory submitter, article writer, forum poster, web designer ..... At the end of the day it comes boiling down to what you especially like or enjoy doing. I love working as webmaster and programmer for myself (own boss).

Before anything money is important and register for Google Adsense Account & Paypal Account.

I hope this helps. Good Luck !!!:)

there are a lot of options for you. you can start posting a lot of quality posts a day, help people as much as you can, then sell your blog feed, your signatures, perhaps you avatar space. easy work:D

if you can, then submit directories, submit sites to 500+ directories, and get 10-20$ for that, nice work and money!

write content, you can write quality content as you are related to the computer science. then you can sell your articles for $10 per 500 words.

make sites, optimize them, get higher pr and sell links or perhaps sell the whole site. there are a lot of options here, just browse through and you will know!:D

It sounds like all you need is a refresher course in the programming language you started. You can then use that to work as a freelancer and make money.
