Facebook can get away with even by placing that sort of restrictions. And moreover, who does not know about them. But can people tell any thing about a site without actually seeing what it has to offer. I don't think so.

When you have got a large member base, the members would do the publicity for you by spreading the word about. Their words and views would be respected as they would be speaking from their very own experiences.

In fact unless your target membership has a broad appeal, I would suggest that there is no need for you to go for any sort of promotion, free or paid. You should concentrate more on actively engaging your existing members by inviting their comments, suggestions and criticism. Accept their views gracefully and politely and work upon them. The more you do that, the more they would become involved and spread the word about.

There have been some very good suggestion put forth earlier in the thread. Some of them are:

Open up your site- YOU ARE NOT FACEBOOK. www.facebook.com has a Google PR7 rank, and Alexa rank of 2 worldwide, US rank of 3 and 389,455 sites linking in. May be millions of unique visitors daily. Where as your Alexa ranking is 7,994,980, with no sites linking in, and a Google PR0.

Interact with your existing members - Engage them, talk to them, send them gifts and ebooks (gifts not in cash but some helpful features like softwares etc), ask them questions, reply promptly to their queries.

The more you respond to their issues and sort them out promptly, the more they will start trusting you. It will help to build a rapport between you and your members. Once that happens and they start staying longer at your site, they more likely they are to bring their friends along so they can share.

Another feature you can do it provide a download section, where you let them download resources for free, or for a discount. You can easily get PLR materials for cheap.

Do it, the membership base is bound to increase. Once it reaches a certain number, introduce a paid membership option. Let every member become an automatic affiliate so that he gets a percentage of every new member he brings in. It will then go truly viral as members would have a real interest in promoting your site.

The views expressed above are not theoretical, they have been learned from my own experience. I did run a social networking site once, and it was fun to do. I am also going to start a membership site soon.

    Hope its helps.

By the way, your site does have a nice look. I like it

You should let visitors see a little more. All I was able to view was the content on the main page. Anything I clicked prompted me to login or signup. Give the visitors a little teaser to attract their interest. Let them see just enough but not the entire thing. This can encourage them to signup. You'll have to figure out what that the teaser might be, or play around with it a bit. If your site is free to join be sure to say so. People like the word Free, and are a bit more likely to join if they know it is truly free.

First of all you are powered by a ning.com script (which has its bonuses and limitations)

Why? Well all ning.com members are a member of your site (thats 37,000,000) but then again if it gets big (you can't really sell the site with its members (because they are ning.com members)

Second of all, the site design sucks and it has no direction i.e. if you are going to be a social network decide what you are going to do and do it well. For instance myspace grew by the music scene and thats why its reverting back to it because its where it became popular and its where it helped it gain traction.

BTW there is a network effect which is why word-of-mouth is the only useful method to promote social networks. Why? Because everyone in the world is connected via 6 people which means as soon as you get people to join (get them to invite people to join too) - an example of this is tagged.com - who have grew to 80million members by (forcing) making people invite their friends etc into their services!

Tell your friends to sign up for an account and tell them to help you promote your site. Promote your site via Twitter, Facebook, and other Social Networking sites.

    Hope this helps!

Offer a free promotion/incentive. Than try to approach websites with targeted traffic and see if you can partner with them to drive traffic to your website.

It helps if there is a way to monetize traffic on your site as then you will be able to pay for the traffic.

But that is facebook at 300 million members. You are not facebook friend. Keep it open and when you get to 300 million, you can close it. Good luck

I just checked out your site, it has a good design to it. I think if you find the your niche you should be able to market your site quite easily.
One thing I noticed is you have a few submissions to your homepage that is relatively adult in nature, e.g photos of women(i know they are not explicit) but could be seen by any young children who browse to your site, so maybe putting those pages/photos in a member only area could be something to consider.
Otherwise good luck with your site
