My mind is always on overdrive, so I find it exceptionally difficult to fall asleep! Any ideas on how I can achieve some shut eye this evening, I'm lying in bed lost for ideas!

    Thanks guys!

Magnesium supplement powder in hot water will put you to sleep. They make it under brand names like "Natural Calm" and "Natural Tranquility."

And stay away from caffeine in soda or coffee at least 8 hours before bed.

You're welcome. They work for me. At bedtime - I heat a mug half full of water in the microwave for one minute, take it out and add two level teaspoons to the hot water. Initially, I just bought the product because I read it was good for stress in general. But since, have enjoyed how it helps me to fall asleep and get good rest. I'm not sure if there are other brands, but I've tried the Calm and Tranquility. Both basically have the same ingredients. The Tranquility is a Vitacost brand, it's not quite as tasty but it's cheaper. Also, for overall feeling good it's probably not a bad idea to start taking a mulit-vitamin as well.

Also - cut out all caffeine, sugar and alcohol if you haven't done so already. I'm a hypnotherapist - sleep hypnosis recordings can be useful too. Drink camomile or decaf green tea during the day. Magnesium is known as 'nature's tranquilizer'. Magnesium oil is absorbed much more effectively than magnesium in tablet form. Really helps to promote sleep too.

Thank you both very much for your help! You both sound like very intelligent people :) I will definitely be trying the magnesium, if it works for stress too then that's a bonus Rebecca! :)
I have always had a life long relationship with caffeine so I definitely think I should cut it out!

    Thanks again!

You're welcome. Also make sure you are getting enough quality rest in the daytime and not working too late.

    Try anchoring yourself.

When you feel very very tired and know you could fall asleep in 3 minutes, do something. Like smell something, or drink something, or eat a specific thing. Or any activity. Do this for around 3 times before repeating at a time you don't feel tired at all, but need to fall asleep quickly.

This kind of worked for me for a while. Its obviously mostly placebo but the brain gets tricked if done correctly.

I am a coffee drinker. 3-4 cups a day - regularly. I have a hard time falling sometimes too. There was a time I cut all caffeine out of my life... I never slept better back then. Stupid caffeine. I love it, I hate it.

I have the same problem. I find writing down what I'm thinking about helps. I know I won't forget what needs doing anyway, but writing things down kind of releases it from my thoughts!

I've found that some of the "sleepy time" teas out there are very helpful. I'm also a big coffee drinker and I just start to substitute tea for coffee around 5PM.

Yes willmingtonW, I know what you mean! Writing down is definitely a good way of getting rid of those annoying little thoughts that wont go away!

BigTeddyBigDeals, sleepy time tea is often a good option, my only problem is most of them just taste like crap! I have found one with Lavender in, and it is actually quite nice! Need to invest more time in finding good teas!

The best way to fall asleep is to be fearless in life. If you fear no one then nothing can stress you out and you will sleep like a baby. Be confident in yourself and don't worry about anything.

I have been through a lot in life and have won eventually, every time. So nothing can keep me awake at night anymore. My conscience is clear and my vision in life is strong. I sleep well because I will it. Will is everything, and life is good if you're strong.

You're a cute little black & white kitten. You should only be thinking of your kitty litter box, your catnip, and if your food bowl is full. So....what's the problem?
