I need some help with flat screen monitors

Ok, I have been wanting one of these for a while because I heard how great they are. So, here it is, Christmas time, so I decide to buy one for the computer I use for work at home. I also buy an identical one for the parents. The parents have been struggling along with a 15 inch monitor and the color has been going out in it.

So I figure this new 19" TFT monitor will be an amazing purchase, especially for them. Well, so far it isn't. I can only make this monitor look good on 1280x1024. Even on 1024x768 it becomes extremely distorted. For the parents, this monitor seems to provide no benefit.

Are there any settings I can adjust that I don't know about to make this work in the smaller resolution? I can see it just fine, so the extra real estate on the monitor will be a benefit, although the monitor I had was 19" already and it worked fine on 1024x768

Am i missing something? I have been known to miss the obvious before

You need to make sure both your monitor and your video card support the resolution you are trying to obtain...

Have you checked your standard video card settings in control panel?

Depending on the monitor though of course you may not beable to obtain good results with one resolution setting that you had on another, best it to simply see what looks best with what you have, IMO

 

I think it has to be a matter of the monitor not supporting the lower resolution. I was unable to see this until I got it home, but in the list of instructions, it makes a note that using a different resolution may cause the distortion.

 

LCD monitors are designed to work at a certain resolution and they will generally look like crap in all others.

 

Simple. Give your parents your monitor, and you use the new one!

 

LOL, thats the deal, I bought both of us new monitors.

I did adjust some settings though, larger icons, setting text to larger (although that only works in some situations), and changing a couple selections for the way text shows up to make it clearer. It works fine for me, but if it doesnt for them, I will put the 400 pound 19" tube type monitor up on their desk

 

LCD monitors need to be ran in their native resolution for optimal image quality so if you want 1024x768 stick with a CRT. You could try enabling ClearType for fonts. Some displays look better with it enabled, others don't.

 

I am using a 17" here and it's just working fine for me..

 

19" running at 1600x1280 with no problems even though the max is 1280x1024.

Changing things like using clear type fonts and running at the highest refresh rate tend to make things easier to see. Just make sure your graphics card can handle it as well.

 

I bought a new computer with a TFT monitor a week ago and the monitor is really annoying the wire (power cable) for the monitor is rarely touchy if you turn the monitor at all it turns of, Try before you buy. Make sure whatever you buy you see it running first.
