I need to vent.

I haven't been here that long, but in the short time I've been here I have tried to be as helpful as humanly possible.

I made the mistake of posting my 'opinion' in a thread where somebody was trying to sell a directory script that I thought was obviously overpriced and would have been outdone by 100 other free solutions. I realise it's not great etiquette to post an opinion in a sales thread, but there are a lot of new people (not just new to DP, new to the game in general) here and I simply wanted to help someone make an informed decision. I see people do it every day to save others the hassle of getting 'taken'.

So what does this guy do? He gives me red rep and gets every one of his damn cronies to do it to. Completely negating any good I've done here.

I'll leave his name out of it, but people like this drive me up the damn wall. I'm not fishing for green rep (I'm pretty sure it's worthless in this cat anyway), but I needed to vent.

Why do people worry about rep? Is there something to be achieved with higher rep?

If you stick around long enough and contribute people will know regardless of what your rep says.

It's not necessarily the rep system I care about actually. It's more to do with the principal behind the action.

How do you know he got his "cronies" to do it as well? Maybe they just agreed and decided to give you red rep on their own.

It can certainly HURT to have red rep if you are thinking about participating in the marketplace sections of this forum (website buy/sell, link sales, etc.)

I think that is why DP now has the iTrader feature to help people see who has buy/sell history...

Don't worry about it, just keep your opinions localized to the general chat and nobody can hurt you! ;p

PS: if you feel like helping someone, PM them, it's private... just a tip. ;)

In any "community" of any size (and this one is large) you will find trolls, sweathearts, the drunks who mutter to themselves. In the real world you can make quick judgements based on visual cues, sound and even smell. In here you can't. You don't know if someone is a mature adult or a script kiddie. If they're totally off their trolley or the voice of reason. Methinks you met the trolls. Move on, stay here, keep being nice and remember to cross the road from time to time.

There are members of this forum who are downright insulting about things I hold dear. I don't call them out because they're probably not people I'd talk to normally, their opinions don't mean anything to me.

Now dear Tony - a few posts above - appears to be baiting a certain sector of the community right now. I'll go check out his posts because a) he's a laugh and b) he's American kafir so he has nothing to lose - me, I'm in NZ and we currently stand to lose millions in trade deals and I don't want the Kiwi that balls it up! But watching him stir is all part of the fun!

I personally don't like the rep system. Mind you, I've never had red rep in any forum I frequent, I just don't like the rep system in general.

I find it affects the way people post/voice their opinions in fear of getting red dots beside their names... also the way they are percieved by others. It would be different if only the forum owner was allowed to give rep (good or bad), but not every single member. Just a thought.

I don't agree. I say how I feel, red rep or no red rep. I'm not going to sugarcoat shit for anyone. If people want to take a whole 2 seconds out of their busy life to give me red rep, well then i'm glad for them.

What do little coloured boxes at the side of your posts on a forum n the world wide web really mean in the great scheme of things? Very little.

    Aiiiiiiiiiiiii. \0/

Exactly.... A person with a red dot by their name immediately makes me suspicious when I see them trying to sell something. "Whatever they did to piss that many people off must be pretty bad", is what I usually think to myself.

However.... I know my good posts will always outweigh the bad and I find it's most often new members that give anonymous red rep. So the good thing is new members either have no rep power or their rep is only worth ONE POINT! So it takes a LOT of them to turn you from green to red so dont worry about it.

I like to go back in the thread and take a stab at them because you know what's funny? At that point they have given you the power to say whatever you feel to them and there is nothing they can do about it because they must rep 20 people just to rep you again. And again, they'll go through all that just to give you one measly red point :)

There is balance in the universe :D
