there are couple scripts you can use for social networking sites. there is still room for social networking sites but only if you give the users something new.

Try putting up some sort of tournaments/competitions where people would compete in something to gain their attention and will to participe in it and in your site

Social Networking sites are very competitive these days, so make sure that you've got a unique one.

Youre going to have to have something unique and attractive in your site to compete with myspace.

That handshakes default skin looks dirty, also i would rather be able to at least customize a few things in the skin and that and maybe customize the coding as the community grew bigger. Here it doesnt seem that, thats possible :(

Do not use scripts like Handshakes if you want to achieve success. Read This
If you use those scripts you should target some specific audience rather than just the general mass.
If you'd like to develop something like myspace or facebook for the general public, you definitely have to custom code it and have something new in there.

I made a social shopping site sometime ago: http://www.shoppersale.com

But managing it and keeping it clean from spammers is taking some minutes everyday.

i will not like to be negetive with your idea, but ensure that you have good financial back up and ability to upgrade regularly, competing with existing social networks is gonna be very difficult, if u feel the features you have in your mind can out beat the rest then go for it.
try doing good research before u start spending for developments
