Is there a way to only display two ads instead of four in my 300x250 rectangle? My CTR went down when the four ads suddenly appear again.

Jarod is correct. You are not allowed to 'choose' the number of ads, except with AdLinks. When you are choosing a specific format for your ads, you are essentially saying 'sure, I'll let you display X amount of ads'. IF you want less ads, try a different format that is smaller.

Hiding ads is NOT allowed. Direct violation of the TOS.

Yeah, use either a couple of the 125x125 button units or one of the 120x240 vertical banners. Either way, you'll get your two ads.

google shows only two (or 3 ads) when the ads have a higher value; you can't really make it so only these ads show on every pageload

The question is, however, why do you have to care about the CTR in this case? the most important and ultimate figure you care is Earning.

I mean, if you can increase CTR is the best, but if the page impress increases due to the larger volume of ads, makes the CTR lower does not affect anything to your earning ... so y bother?

I only care when my earning decreases in comparison with previous figures, I dont give a damn to CTR or eCPM when the earning is increasing.

Google switched the ad units from four to two only if they believe you will have better CTR because of it

Google Adsense controls that, and there's nothing you can do about it.
