I'm thinking of relocating to an area where the rent is cheap so that I can maximize the amount of money I can reinvest in my online endeavors. What places of the world do you know where the cost of living is cheap and the internet connection is good?

Rich Karlgaard, publisher of Forbes magazine, has a book out called something like the 200 cheapest places to live in the US. Mostly it involves getting away from the coasts. Places like Des Moines, IA etc.

Des Moines doesn't sound too bad. I just found an apartment there on craigslist for $320 a month that includes internet. Is it cold there?

I left in 1971 :) but it can get very cold in the winter. I did my masters research in limnology at Red Haw lake SE of Des Moines and had to cut through 12" to 18" of ice to get water samples. It was real pretty in the spring though and we got some great pictures of a frog with his throat all puffed out to amplify his croaks for the lady frogs.

Anyone know how good the internet connections are in South Dakota? Looks like homes can be found as low as $150,000 there.

Having moved to Iowa from Texas ( I am the Texan, the wife is the Iowan..long story).
Found that yep, a bit cheaper to live here (I live south of Des Moines).
Trying to get son to move up here, tons of companies in Des Moines alone looking for computer knowledgeable people and the pay is about comparable to Houston.

Cold??? Why there is heat up here that works!

    My recommendation?
Move to Iowa.....one of the perks is getting to eat sweet corn picked that morning (when in season). Or shortly, going out and picking fresh mushrooms.

yup it is true, coz $1 = 51 pesos. Philippines is big island and terrorist acts here are almost solved and very rare now... manila and the other location that i post is very far from the area where the rare terrorist activity..btw there is a lot of americans, korean, japanese, chinise and europeans study and make business here.. i uploaded a Philippine map. the part that i put red marks is the place where is not safe for a tourist to go and the blue marks where there is lot of foreigners live, study and make biz..

What im going to do is going to live in Ecuador. Great country, gorgeous, cheap... people do well with $500 a month there... not sure how much houses are there but the main reason you'd wanna go to another country is to not pay the huge taxes you gotta pay in the US ;)

Don't the phillipines have tsunmais and hurricanes and stuff? :p

The problem with completely moving to a foreign country is that if you're not full-time working on the internet and getting paid in USD$, you'll probably have the same problems getting money with their currency as it will be expensive to them in their currency. :p

The cheapest places to live in are the country, the desert, or the suburbs. Now the problem with living in the desert and the country is that you are pretty much all online with no civilization miles of you, so if you get kidnapped or killed nobody might know for a while. :p

I live in the suburbs of NJ. It's alright, but VERY expensive. So just a thought: Don't live in NJ suburbs, way too expensive for some reason. I live in an old historic double house that was basically falling apart when we got it. No yard, no nothing...it's worth $200,000 though and I think that its a shitty house compared to some big ones!!!

So either move into the suburban/country part of your current state, or simply move to the midwest. Avoid areas that are notorious for bad weather which will include but not be limited to floods, hurricans, tornados, mudslides, avalanches, dustballs, lightning, etc. And if your area is exposed to that kind of vulnerability, definately get the appropriate insurance to protect yourself and your investments (ie: flood insurance).

Good luck finding a new home! :)
Don't forget that you can always become a wild man or wild woman just by living in the woods naked inside a cardboard box, hunting your own food and such. "DFine! Let's start the bidding at $1 with increments of $1! Auction ends 1 day after last bid was placed! Thank you! :D

Maybe in bumblefuck! Dude.. I have lived in the Desert for a while now and it isn't cheap... Here in Palm Springs most of the houses are still twice the national average. (at least)

The past couple of years it's getting worse... sure the real estate market was on fire but here... well.. all the old people want to move here and they have been driving up the housing costs. Most of the new homes in the area are going for $600,000+++ b/c the old dudes with the FAT retirement accounts can pay it... and they do.
