iexplore.exe problem

Hey...does anyone on here know how to debug a computer with the iexplore.exe problem? What happens is I click on the blue "e" (IE) icon and nothing happens. I sometimes have to click it 3-4 times before the IE browser comes up. Then, I look in the task manager (using windows XP) and there are loads of instances of "iexplore.exe" running in the background.

I really need a piece of software like adaware that will fix this...trying to avoid a techie solution which is all I can find on the web.

    Many thanks,
    ash

Have you tried to go to microsoft and ensure that you have the latest version, patches, etc?

Also, you might be able to get a registry clean up freeware program that would clear up any conflicts.

If you're worried about adware, spyware, many ISPs offer free downloads so you're not out spending $30 bucks unnecessarily.

If you want a good paid program for adware, I have a link to some, but I'd check with your ISP for a free one first.

hmm...well, Ive done all that and then some (listed below), to no avail:

    adaware
    spybot
    xoftspy
    trojanhunter
    registry mechanic

The problem goes deeper than that...please advise :D

    thanks,
    ash

What version of Windows are you running? i.e. XP Pro SP2

What version of IE are you running?

Have your downloaded the full, latest version directly from MSFT; completely uninstalled the version on your machine; run disk cleanup; run defrag; and install the latest downloaded version?

    IE 6.0.29
Windows XP Pro SP2 - all up to date
    Newer machine

multiple instances of iexplore.exe running in taskmanager...I have to go and shut them down one at a time every single day

I have not uninstalled IE and all...really want to avoid that but if I absolutely have to I will I guess. Also, the Microsoft "help" site is ultra confusing...do you have a direct link for the "new version"

How do I uninstall current IE?

    many thanks,
    ash

    IE Download

Microsoft also has a beta anti-spyware program that might be worth a try.

I would download IE before uninstalling.

    To uninstall:

    Settings » Control Panel » Add/Remove Programs

You should be more careful about the stuff you install on your computer. More is not necessarily better. http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm#xos_note

I'd also avoid using a Registry Cleaner unless you know exactly what you are doing since the possibility of removing a vital registry key is rather high.

I'm sure you have a valid point, but I wonder why, then they gave xoftspy a clean slate in saying "Given these changes we can no longer regard XoftSpy as "rogue/suspect" anti-spyware."

    thanks for the input,
    ash

Do you have a backup of your registry or is it too long ago since you first used the registry cleaner?

Very solid points! Further, many spyware programs contain spyware themselves. Also, they will read other like programs as "dirty laundry". Additioanlly, installing multiple antivirus programs can lock up a system altogether are truly create havoc

    ok...so I'll remove xoftspy.

Not sure about the registry backup...it's not past my skill level really, I'm just looking for a quick cure.

    thanks for the help,
    ash
