If I had 1¢ for every 5xx error

My host (I'm currently shopping for replacement) has been down quite a bit lately. I have been getting 5xx errors an average of 190 times a day.

I am not completely sure that the .htaccess file is not causing the errors.

The pages that fail always work when I try any of the links (does that sound like a problem with the .htaccess? - what kinds of redirects or mod_rewrite causes this?).

Wouldn't it be more likely that my host, which also hosts 171 other sites, is the cause of the 5xx errors?

Any help is deeply appreciated -- I'd give you half of the pennies but I didn't get any ¢¢¢ for those thousands of 5xx errors.

That helps to make up my mind -- so much down time and the 5xx errors.

I just need to decide on the options that I'll need. I am debating getting either a virtual dedicated server or a simple hosting (shared server). Certainly, virtual dedicated or dedicated is the way to go. The minimum GoDaddy shared server plan is what I think I will go with - I bought my domains through them.

I am also going to search the DP forums for good hosting suggestions.

Have you checked the error logs to find out more info?

You may want to put some of the suspect urls in a header checker to see what the response codes are.

Don't do GoDaddy shared... one of my personal worst picks for a host.

It is likely because of traffic loads that you are getting the 'intermittent' 5xx errors. If it was htaccess, you'd have it 24/7.

I buy all of my domains through GoDaddy, but I wouldn't dare touch their shared hosting... something about not being able to do the things that Linux/Apache allow because they have some policy against it...

Spry costs more, but they have excellent service, their servers run like the wind, and you can do the things that you need to with your site. VPS starts at about $50/mo.

If you're seeing 500 errors and when you click on the link to the page in the list and everything seems fine then you are almost certainly having host problems.

A 404 error would be more likely in the case of an .htaccess error.

Luckily those errors (500) will probably quickly be removed from the error list.

I've updated my web host - and virtually all of the 500 errors are no longer occuring. They have now become history (no longer in my Sitemap's unreachable list). :D

In case anybody out there has issues with getting numerous 5xx errors - consider upgrading to better hosting, or see if your host can upgrade your connection.
