What are your interests? What do you most like to talk about, and do you have any hobbies? Although sometimes competitive, starting up a discussion site about your favorite pastimes/activities or collectible items might work for you.

Yea always start with your interests. Your passion can keep you going even when things aren't moving.

I don't want to sound as some smart-ass-douche but investing and building websites (successful ones) is skill.
You'll need to put some effort into it. This takes time. Don't aim for quick buck. Learn about money, about
investing. Make your own thinking behind each investment. Couple of years back my friend persuaded me to
invest into something, it was a "sure thing". :D My little greedy mother fucker inside me said "I am all in it for quick buck..."
And I never saw that money again and never will. I lost substantial money, for my standards back then.
Looking back it was best thing it could happen. Now I am skeptical about any "sure-thing". I try to make
my own thinking behind investments. But my little greedy mother fucker is still there... :D
So do your homework, learn about it, think about it and invest into it.

Idea is the most important thing, more than money. I don`t think you will find asking online that special idea that makes an investment a winner.

Are you looking for something that you can invest in and just see your money grow or are you looking for something that you can make personally and put work into it. Sorry was a little confused about your question.

In that case you may want to try finding some businesses to invest in. Send me a PM we might be willing to work with you we are looking for investors currently for a future project we are working on. We mainly are looking for startup capital so that we can start the process of setting things in motion.

I like your enthusiasm, and I think it would be great to see a type of 'swap meet' combined with advice on how to install / repair or replace parts. But realistically you need to consider this as a hobby (and not as a business investment). I dont know the names of the forums off by heart, but a few times when I am looking for advice on cars, alternators and so on, I do come across a wide range of forums that cover these topics.
Now the difference between you joining that forum(s) and contributing, vs creating your own is that with your own, you stand to lose thousands in software, hosting, marketing, promotion and so on. Whereas if you just join an existing car forum and contribute, you wont earn anything, but it costs you nothing! You can take holidays, give up, and its all good. But if you own it... forget it.
Regarding selling parts though, i think these days these are better handled via ebay (or other) this way you dont have to deal with the constant disputes. But I have seen some forums where members would post the links to parts for sale on ebay, and from what I can tell, it worked really well.

I will be honest, I can put $1000 into shares, and get back $900-$1100... pretty much at anytime its easy to cash out. To add to this, managing shares is as simple as checking emails or takes only a minute or two a day.
With a forum (or any website)... its a bit different. You could spend in a year $5k easy, and if you get bored, or need to cash out, then UNLESS your site is earning well, then you will be lucky to get $500 back (On this point, while I have had a couple of "wins" I have sites that I would be happy if I could get back just 10% of the development costs... ). You will also need to spend alot of time managing the forum. I have seen many forums closed due to excessive spam. Spending hours each day, removing crappy posts, links to viagra, links to child porn, isnt fun, and considering you wont be earning anything for months, IMHO, its not worth it.

You might think you can just moderate it on the weekend, but especially if you are making the mistake of running with adsense at the beginning, adsense can ban your account based on the content on the forum. So it is critical that the forum is moderated regularly.

I have been providing web hosting for years, and it is sad to see that after a year, some sites are just deleted by their owners -> they didnt even bother to sell or renew the domain name and left it to expire. Simply having a site, paying for SEO, paying for advertising, is not going to be a guarantee of success.

If you are still keen to go ahead, at least check out the "partnerships" area of this forum. There are a few others that are interested in running forums (or other projects), and with multiple people working together on the project, and some cash, anything is possible.
Another suggestion might be to fund the development of phone apps. There has been some insane successes from this field, but some people that have the most brilliant ideas might lack funding to hire people to have this done. Teaming up with them (having some proper contracts in place), would be ideal.
