Iowa residents may become the first in the U.S. to use a smartphone mobile app as their driver's license.

It makes a lot of sense. I've got a credit card "sticker" on the outside of my phone, to have my license on my phone either in an app or stuck on the outside would be fine by me.

Well, the OP has been banned, but it is still an interesting issue. For example, having only hardcopy driver's licenses has likely reduced the ability of identity thieves and/or other fraudsters from using them in their nefarious activities. I wonder how a digital version will change that scenario?

Good point. I think we need to get smarter about ascertaining identity all round.

In NZ we have a vast pool of non-English immigrants and their children. They commonly have an ethnic name and an anglicised name. Then the women might take the surname of their current partner without the formality of a marriage or deed poll. One person, if the crimewatch programs are to be believed, can have about 10 names that are all "legitimate". They can then hit up our welfare system under each name, sign declarations fraudulently and get paid over and over when out of work.

Add to that one of our crims went to jail under his stepfather's name and managed to get a passport and skip the country under his birth father's name. Obviously our border control is having issues tieing multiple names to single individuals too.

Going electronic has certainly helped because information sharing is better but the crafty types are still able to work the system. Bring on biometrics, I guess.

The tech-junkie part of me is happy at the idea that there are being strives made in digital integration in daily life, but something tells me that this will be an exploitable idea that'll allow hackers to create fake IDs easier and more convincingly than physical copies.

Not to mention it'll expose any and all vulnerabilities with local DMVs that implement this idea for hackers to exploit (by allowing access to their systems via smartphone)--and something tells me Iowa isn't a state that'll have a database that'll be hard to exploit and create fake IDs with.
