Irrelevant Ads & Second Ad Unit

Discussion in 'Placement / Reviews / Examples' started by NameWolf, Apr 20, 2006.

    Hello Guys,

On one of my humor/games sites, instead of showing ads about humor & games, adsense is showing powerpoint and SWF ads due to flash file embedded in the page. I have inserted <!-- google_ad_section_start(weight=ignore) --> code couple of weeks ago but nothing has changed. Is there any other way to handle this matter to better target my own niche ?

Also most of the time, second ad unit on my page does not show up ? Why is this and how can I get it to display all the time/more often ? What are the factors regarding this ?

Thanks in advance for all your advice,

    Regards,

Don't know what else you could do to get more relevant ads except ad more content with embedded keywords that you want to get ads for. Keyword density helps.

As to the second ad, just as Google has problems sending you relevant ads, and seems to be defaulting to generic "category" ads, it predictably has problems filling up other ads. Nothing you can do about it. Solve the first problem and it'll fix the second one, I'd imagine.

Ads that appear on your site are based heavily on the content of your pages and the location. You should be able to get relevent ads if you have enough contenet on your pages. Also the age of the site amtters. It could be that Google has not fully indexed your pages. In that case PSAs will appear.

Sharing the url will help to answer the second part of your question.

There should be two 468x60 ads, one above the game and one below.

Edit: Btw, I am talking about the game pages, not the main page.

Everything seems to be fine except the relevancy of the ads - the second ad unit is showing graphical ads
Put some text separating the flash game and the ad units that should do the trick .. maybe a small description of the game

Btw, I am talking about the game pages, not the main page. Apologies for the confusion.

Edit: Thank you max_pain. you have been very helpful. Games already have descriptions. As someone suggested maybe I should place some embedded keywords in the pages before the ad code.

    Maybe something like this will help ;

<!-- <h1>games, play free games, free games, arcade games</h1> -->
<!-- games, arcade, play free games, free games, arcade games -->

I have a couple of arcades myself and have had the same problem. Actually, I would imagine that anyone with a site that has a lot of pages also has the same issue. Adsense will not show on a url that it does not recognize. Therefore, you have to visit the page at least once so that it's contents can be crawled. For instance, I pulled up your site and went to /game/10830/War-in-Iraq.html and only one ad unit came up (the one above the game). However, a couple of minutes later, the ad unit at the bottom started showing up too.

So really the only thing you can do about the issue is to either load up the page once yourself, or wait until it gets a view from one of your visitors. And unfortunately, I have noticed that the process (of not all ad units displaying) seems to happen all over again when google decides to crawl the page again, but at least it's automated this time around and doesn't require a visit first.

maybe put a sitewide description in your header or footer with your keywords? More content on the page will definately help.

Targeting AdSense with the <!-- google_ad_section_start(weight=ignore) --> may offer NO change if Google doesn't crawl that page. I have some pages that seem to be crawled in a few days, and others that are never crawled for whatever reason. It doesn't seem that AdSense is smart enough to pick up on it right away, but I could be wrong here.

Does anyone have any "proof" to how quickly page section targeting takes effect?

NameWolf, I just noticed. You have "Sponsored Game Links" under your Adsense ads. You might want to just change it to "Sponsors" or "Ads" to avoid problems with the TOS. Adsense is very specific about what they allow to be posted above their ads.

Thanks jack. I will check this with them and act accordingly.

dadasays, Google state on their own page that it may take them anywhere between 2-4 weeks for them to crawl weight tags.
