    Do you need to have a google sitemap if you want to rank well? I'm in the sandbox but I wanted to do all my best for when I get out...is a sitemap necessary?

    If you have some pages which are not indexed in google then you need to create a sitemap.

    If every page you have is indexed in google then there is no point doing a sitemap.

    I guess it won't hurt to make one. But it could probably do some damage if you forget to update it often to remove dead links.

    It's not necessary, but it does improve your chances of making Google aware of all of your pages, and subsequently having them all indexed.
