Is anyone good with router problems?

    In my home office we have a Vodafone router which also gives us VOIP for two phones.

    The phones are still working and Vodafone claim everything looks ok at their end. However we can't connect to the web via Ethernet or wifi using desktop, laptop or phone. If I ping a site the IP is shown as [1.1.1.1]. Using a browser either doesn't connect or asks me to log into the router - but logging in fails too.

    Vodafone say it's not their problem and we need to get someone in (not a good idea on a Saturday) who can confirm its a router issue.

    Does anyone have any hints on what tests I should be doing?

    Fwiw our contract expires on the 19th - walking away is an option.

    You may have already done these things because they are pretty basic, but I thought that it would not hurt to mention them:

    1. Have you tried connecting your laptop or desktop by cable directly to the modem (bypassing the router?) If you get through to the Internet, you have identified the router as the issue. However, if you still cannot connect, it would seem to be at the modem level or further out to the street.

    Good luck with this.

    2. I am not familiar with the Vodaphone router, but most have a button to reset the router to factory settings which is worth trying. I have also had success with other routers by removing the power cord for 30 seconds and then powering the router back up again.

    Thanks for giving it a go.

    I don't know if the Vodafone guy did something after our phone call but we have some progress... the windows 8 laptop can connect using ethernet connected to the router (modem/router is an all in one box)

    My win7 box can't and the win7 laptops on wifi can't. The phones can't.

    The upside, I guess, is that I can research without peering at my tiny phone screen.

    Are you saying every IP resolves to 1.1.1.1? Have you checked the DNS servers that the router is using are correct? Possibly on Windows 8 they overrided the DNS servers for the LAN connection and that is why they are able to connect.

    Edit - I'm assuming from Windows 8 you can connect to the router and login?

    You probably already did it, but did you completly power off the router/modem (unplug the power cord) for at least 30secs and put it back on? Also it may be a DHCP issue. On your windows desktop and laptop. Open a command line (Windows + r, and type in "cmd") when it's open type ipconfig /renew (enter). Then test if your internet works. Also you can try to ping 8.8.8.8 (in command line) see if at least your computer can ping the outside world. Good luck

    A bit cautious about this because of the VOIP setup.
    Yep, done that, and once with the Vodafone guy on the line who did a port refresh while it was turned off.
    8.8.8.8 failed :(
    The dns settings on my computer were googles but have been changed back to vodafones - with a reboot after.

    On the win8 laptop I can log into the router - hadn't tried that from that machine. Curious.

    and fwiw I dug out my ancient ipad and charged it and it has the same issue.

    Really at this point I would reset the router, it shouldnt break your voip with vodaphone.

    Glad it has all worked out. I read your post earlier and was going to suggest to change your providers. My wife (before we met) got stuck with one provider that gave her nothing but grief. We are with a better provider now and all is well.

    i don't think that everyone is good with the router. cause if he doesn't know basic then there must be a prob.

    Yes, but it's still flaky.
    I find that routers usually last a couple of years, so this one is failing right on schedule.

    Usually routers have a control panel that can be browsed (via firefox, explorer, etc.) at an IP started with 192.x.x.x.
    So you can control your device at that page like visiting a web page.
    Your router IP address changes depending on your router brand. Visit their websites, call them or search at google to know the IP of your router.
    Sometimes hard-resetting a router can not resolve the connection issues.

    Thanks @makeit easy - the router lasted the extra week that I needed it too but continued to perform erratically. Logging in to the control panel only showed that it should be working - it didn't analyse for errors or unpredictable events. It's now being disected on my son's bedroom floor.

    The replacement is hopefully going to be better - some issues with the repeater that I need to sort out but wifi is back on so we're happy.
