Is it possible to be the next MySpace?

I think it's possible, but it's now not so original anymore

 

Myspace is written in ColdFusion, not php, and was written by the guy who started it.

 

the short answer is; no.

Myspace will evolve and likely be the main one forever and ever and ever.

 

They sure are waiting a long time to do it, and allowing a lot of competition to catch up...

Upgrading Myspace is going to be a nightmare. I wouldn't want to be the project manager for that job.

 

No way. Myspace will die, just like friendster has. The social networking market will then probably become fragmented, like has already been mentioned - by region, but also by niche.

I'm working on a network for a specific niche, it's still quite young but it's growing really really rapidly, and the great thing is me and everyone else involved is really enthusiastic about the niche. In our opinion it can't fail. Before the big businesses get in (i found out they plan to launch their own version in 2008) we hope it'll be too late. Maybe then they can buy us out like fox purchased myspace....hmm...we can but hope.

 

Everyone talks Rubish. Youtube was made by two guys man.... You just need a unique idea, some sort of funds for advertising, time, and knowledge. Oh and Effort.

I agree with you...all you need is that one break and word of mouth and next thing you know you dont even have to spend money on advertising ever again. MySpace is banking $30 million per month...with $0 spend each month on advertising.

 

yes myspace is in coldfusion, tom did not started from a garage and it will lose a lot of members cause the new SN around specially niche sites.
Not to mention the few millions funny accounts that it has, we all know some people have like 10 accounts to promote and to build friends and sell it.

 

The only reason myspace got so big was because it was a unique idea at the time. You wont get as big as them without millions upon millions of dollars. Come up with a unique idea of your own that many people will want and you will be rich.

 

as previously mentioned: The key is in a good niche.

facebook focuses on students; bebo on ireland. the niche can be anything.

the trick is finding something that your niche finds useful. for example xoog, my pet project, has a niche of manchester night life. what ive uniquely built is a guide, a <b>local</b> community and, the sit eis constantly having requested additions.

it is no myspace, but it is growing extremely fast and with the non-financial support of several local businesses.

 

How about a social networking for webmasters..is that done yet?

no i'm talking about social networking site like myspace but for webmasters. Each webmaster has its own profile, list of their sites, list their hits, tips, tools, scripts...network with others..meet you webmasters and have different groups of interests.

 

I think if you have something like myspace with voice like paypal etc...maybe that would be an advancement...

However, probably the safest cheapest way would be the specialize in a niche area. Myspace has the world, but you could be a specific religion, race or culture...

Given the success of myspace, it would take a monumental task to come up with a decent alternative. I am not saying that it cant be done- what i am saying is you need a good design and marketing plan. Well good luck to you!

I think myspace isn't big enough. They haven't got THE only peice of cake. They've got a significant market share, but not enough

I understand that myspace is one of the largest sites on the web, but I believe that the potential of the concept of SN can "easily" reach ~40% of internet users. Maybe not anytime soon, but in the future.

There are other sites that have the traffic and want the market share, but dont have the tools (yet) {eg. msn live spaces}. I think they have a good chance when they start wrestling it out with my space.

 

The next myspace will have to be something completely new to compete with all the existing competition. Unless it offers something really innovative and new no one is going to change from thier current social networks.

 

I ran a test on this a few months back before i set out to develop something realy serious, I opened www.facevault.com (screenshots are al little outdated, the general style has changed alot since then) for a 5 week period to "test the water" i spent nothing on advertsiing and via word of mouth only the site went to just shy of 10,000 members in that 5 week period. The sites now in offline development for a non beta release with some very, very interesting features

 

That's an incrediable achievement. My new network has been running 3 weeks and has just shy of 100 members. Trouble is i know it's a unique idea with absolutely huge potential, and though word is starting to spread, at this rate i will be aiming for that many members by the end of the year.

 

niche is one of the key to success. a specific region might need a special feature that cannot be seen in a common sns site so it is best to start on something small that will grow big.
