North London high standards? Says the Welsh guy who uses the word 'Dude'.

As far as 'untelligent or uneducated' being 'the point of the whole thread' - the threads topic is on the contrary. But I agree that it's pretty easy to put you down :)

Haven't you heard of humour DUDE :)

That is JUST the sort of arrogance and attitude that caused this thread to be started, and as I said bullies and cowards put people down, as it is the easy route to take.

It saddens me that you decide to take this tone, and deal with something on the open forum therby hijacking the thread, when the matter should have been dealt with via PM. If you took issue with my post and felt it was taking the thread off topic, then PM was the way to go.

You didn't like my original post so you turn it into a personal issue. Fine, whatever dude :)

    Ok mate.

You turned the thread into a pointless self-promoting exercise, it's easy to call me a bully for correcting you I guess.

On a side note, what the hell does it have to do if he's got a black dad and a white mother? Why does that matter? You're implying that as he has a black father, he's inherently going to do worse at school? What did you mean by that and most importantly, why is that relevant to the topic of the thread?

I will answer your points as calmly as possible. Please don't refer to me as mate, as it is a form of talking down, and something I personally dislike. It is obvious from the tone of your post that somehow I have offended you, if this is the case then I apologise, it was not intentional.

I don't see how you can say it is self promoting, as the story was (I thought) relevant to what we were discussing, what have I got to gain? How on earth am I self promoting? Forgive my ignorance.

The reason I thought it relevant was that the thread was discussing mainly Indians/Asians and the command of the English language in general, and this guy fell into that category. You said
I certainly didn't imply that at all, and am sorry if you drew that conclusion, it was not the case. As I said it was relevant to the thread at hand because he was the sort of person we were talking about. I can't answer the second part of the question 'what did you mean by that' because I didn't mean what you assumed I did.

I will say this though, at the time, it was unusual to see anyone bar white Welsh folk in the area we lived, and as a result, this guy suffered terrible bullying, which resulted in his missing school, which resulted in his getting into criminal activities, and being 'labelled'. When we first took him on, he gave the impression of being stupid because of his poor communication skills. But he CERTAINLY was not, as was proven afterwards.

What I was getting at was that YES people do link (wrongly IMO) command of the English language with levels of intelligence. The boy who had a poor command of English was the same boy who managed this large store. He didn't somehow transform his IQ, he just got educated. This is what I was getting at, and I just used the story to re-enforce how people confuse intelligence and education.

My written English skills are terrible, because I am by and large self taught. I could tell you why, but I fear you would say I am self promoting again. But it is enough to say that I wasn't able to attend school regularly. For years I suffered as a result of this lack of skills, and still do I guess.

So there you have it, no self promotion, no hidden agenda, no racist undertones, just myself being open, as I always am online, and using real examples to illustrate a point. It is the style I have developed, as I find people can relate to these sort of things better.

Sorry if something I wrote offended you somehow.

Since when has referring to someone as a 'mate' been patronising? I call my friends mates, if you personally dislike being called a mate, then I can see that you might have other problems.

The thread is about how people judge those who don't know English. As far as I can tell from your story, your guy didn't have a good education - but he knew English. I just failed to see the relevancy.

You should probably say that in future when you state someones skin colour in reference to their education.

I don't think you have terrible written English, nor do I think everyone who is 'self taught' does. I would consider myself largely self taught as I only attended 2 years of English lessons in secondary school.

    Back to the original topic...

Good English skills have definite economic value.

This is the reality in this year on this planet, no matter how you may feel about it.

Good English skills have a definite economic value because people who can communicate well in English have more opportunities for making larger amounts of money than people without good English skills.

This is true in America, as well as in most of Europe and Asia.

In my field, for example, about half of the technical manuals are available only in English. If you can not read English well, you will never advance past a certain career level.

Yes, the English literacy rate in Japan is very high because English is taught in all Japanese secondary schools.

IMO knowing English language doesn't mean your better to others who don't.
As long as you can express your self and other can understand you.
And you are able to respond to them and that's it.

No not true at all. It's so cute. I speak to Turkish guys online who spell things wrong and structure the sentence completely higgilty piggilty... it makes me want to sex them up! YEHAAAW!

Seriously though, they may not have perfect English but they make the effort. That's how I look at it... & until I am 100% perfectly fluent in their language I would never criticize someone or look down on someone for trying their best.

However if you are from an English speaking country and you still can't spell or use the correct grammar then you are fair game and I will happily mock the shxt out of you.
