I know it's lame to quote myself but I decided to do a small experiment.
On the site that I had only one ad per page I added a second one to see the results.

The results after the first day are (in differences % in order not to break the TOS) :
    CTR: +16%
    ECPM: +71%
    CPC: +47%

Of course this is just one day and no definite conclusions can be drawn, I will probably leave it like that for a week, then add another ad (3 total) and compare the three.

Let us know your stats after a lengthier experiment. Say, a week.

    Ok,
here are the results up until now. I have compared the last week with the week before I added the second ad unit.

The data are always in relative % differences

    CTR: +26%
    eCPM: +94%
    CPC: +55%

Not exactly what most people would expect.
However, there is always the possibility that advertisers have raised their bids.
    Some information about the website
It doesn't receive any huge ammounts of traffic (about 500 uniques per day)
95% of the traffic is from search engines and most of that from Yahoo. About 40% of the traffic is from north America while the rest is from all over the world (lots of countries with 1%)

Anyway, now I need to find a way to add a 3rd ad unit without making it look like a MFA.

I always use the maximum allowed, 3 ad units, 1 link unit and 2 search boxes (well often I use only one search boxe) and I'm not consistent with referrals because they really don't work.

A good setup I've found is to group them together, so if someone wants to avoid them you make their job easy, but if it is an internet user who doesn't care, they will probably click more often than if the ads are all over the site at different places, because grouping the blocks make it a section of the site.
    examples of grouping:
3 leaderboards 768x90 one above the other.
1 leaderboard 768 and 2 block 336x280 under (two side to side, not one under the other)
