I think a lot of people seem to not understand that social media is about finding your target market and taking part in that community. It isn't just spamming facebook, twitter, and whatever other site you use. I find that different sites are good for different things. I almost always use Pinterest, Tumblr, Reddit, and StumbleUpon now. Those sites are just easy page views and easy links. If you are going to use Facebook and Twitter, you really have to commit to it to make it worth it. By that, I mean you need to take part everyday, try to network, and spend some money on marketing.

There are also other factors which influence, timing is really important .there is a difference are you doing paid advertising or trying to create awareness about your brand and get more followers depending on your plan., try not to pick a random company that says they are social media experts, most of them may lie to you they don’t know what they are doing. I agree that if social media is your only marketing strategy, then things probably won't go well! However, using Facebook and Twitter to interact and engage with your customers and others in your industry can be very beneficial for creating a good brand image.

 

Social media has a proven impact on marketing and brand promotion, but we must not set aside its functionality on social campaigns and fast information dissemination whenever it is needed.

Of course it works, but in my opinion before the begining you should determine with your aims and then choose which of the SM are more suitable for working with. I think there are 3 main criteria according to which we should choose the right sm channel:
1. Your geografical position (some sm are more popular in one country and less in the other: for example vk.com is a good platform for CIS companies)
2. Your target audience (I mean the average age of users. it`s easy to find the statistics about the audience of each social network in the global network)
3. Your market (B2B or B2C) Some platforms can give you followers but not customers.
