Is Social Networking helps?

I am not understanding the concept of Social networking sites. I also have posted lot of articles to them for SEO purpose but I do not feel it useful rather than just it get posted.Can some one help me understand how to get the juice out from these?

In social networking, you have to post link in your profile, blog, join many groups and post link there. if they have social bookmarking with social networking, you can submit your site there. make many/lots friend once they become your friend, they will check your link and your activities so you will get traffic to your site.
