Joomla and Wordpress both have its pros and cons , but if you want to be a professional blogger go for Wordpress. If you need a site with complex setup like online shops, photo or video management, download management, community sites to name a few - then go for Joomla.

Both have lots of plugins and extendable features - But Joomla with three areas (components, Modules and Plugins) is very powerful in terms of extensibility.

Wordpress is a quick publishing tool and also a micro-CMS, while Joomla is a multimedia publishing tool and a full CMS. You cannot compare a blog application and a CMS as they are like a 2 seater cessna and private jet. Both are superior in their own aspect.

Joomla is a fantastic CMS, but WordPress is just so much simpler for most people to get to grips with. Joomla and WordPress both are good and better open source content management system. Joomla can also be used with a great ease by any user with a little knowledge. User can easily add new page and can modify existing page using the editor support in this.

WordPress, although it's less powerful it is easier and way less buggy.
As of the latest Joomla version (2.5.4), I found it to be buggy to the point where I wouldn't want to use or have my clients use it.

Although not an option mentioned, I prefer Drupal over the other two.

Wordpress. Never liked Joomla anyway, so, when WP was created, it was easy for me to choose it as a favourite. really good script, excellent development resources and countless possibilities.

You will need to look at what tasks you are using it for.
I prefer Wordpress because of all the features, plugins and themes available. It is also seo friendly and easy to use.

If you have some programming language skills then Joomla will be perfect, because it is best for search engines!! but its little harder to update!!
In the other hand, wordpress is also good for search engines and it is a famous CMS platform, with an easy to use admin panel and a huge collection of plugins.
