So I am in Yahoo music and wow, there's a song I really like. I should buy the album but always seem to forget when I'm out and about so I'm gonna live on the wild side and download a song I paid for.

I know if I spent 5 minutes searching I could get it for free but I'm walking on the wild side, remember? New experiences and all that.

    Ok. 'Buy'.

Uh. Ok, I can't buy this song without downloading the Yahoo music engine. Oh, wtf, I'll give it a go. Download. Run the .exe.

F*** me. This thing puts some amount of crap onto a person's computer. No, I don't want to install Yahoo toolbar. No, I don't want to make my feckin home page Yahoo either. Just install the bloody music player, will you?! Fer cryin' out loud, NO, I do not want to install Yahoo friggin' Messenger and share my music with my friends!

Great. Pfft. I need to restart.

Never mind, once I get back online I can go buy that track I wanted.

    Reboot.

Sign on, launch the player. Arrrrgh, wtf was that?! Some screaming cowboy screeches Yahoo! from the player. Someone must've thought that would be a cool gimmick. Dickhead.

Right, search. Locate artist. Find track. 'Buy'.

Oh for f*ck sake! Yahoo Wallet. I have to sign up for Yahoo Wallet in order to purchase. Ok, I'm nearly there. Bollocks. I'll have to sign up with a new Yahoo ID since I've no idea what crap I put in when I signed up with the last one. Finally choose a username and get through the sign-up process. Details are in and I have my sparkling new Yahoo ID and I'm signed up for Yahoo Wallet.

Search. Locate Artist. Find track. 'Buy'. Great, it's going through. Huh? No I don't want to subscribe to Yahoo's premium service with monthly subscription. I just want the bloody track I like. How hard can it be?

Search. locate, 'buy'. Aw, geeeeze-uus-hh. It's a friggin nag screen. I'll click and cancel to get rid of it. 'Buy' Aha! It's going through! At last!

Whadda ya mean there was an error with my payment? It's only $0.99!!!

Aw bugger. The 'Music Engine' has stalled. Ctrl Alt Del. Die, ya bastard!

Relaunch. Locate artist. 'Buy'. Nope. I must confirm my email address. That must've been the problem. Right. Done. Locate. 'Buy'. Nag screen. I DON'T WANT YOUR POXY SUBSCRIPTION! Just gimme the track I want and let me get on with my life, why don't you?! I'm paying for it. What's the bloody problem? Huh? What? I've jumped through all your crappy hoops, installed the software. I JUST WANT MY MUSIC! GIMME IT! NOW!!!!

Nag screen. You utter bastards, Yahoo, for putting me through this.

Aaaaaaarrrggghhh! The f*ckin thing has stalled again. Ctrl Alt Del. Die! Die! Die! You piece of crap software!

Great, I've got a feckin Yahoo wallet I didn't want and no, I can't delete the bastard thing.

F*ck it. Stick your Music Engine up yer Yahoo's. I'm done with that crap.

Go with usenet. All the free music you could ask for at FAST speeds. As fast as your connection is thats how fast your music will d/l. Sometimes I get as high as 800kb ps, and its free. Plus they have movies, games, software and all that stuff too.

Reminds me when friend wanted me to download yahoo messenger. When it tried to install yahoo toolbar I freaked and refused to download yahoo messenger. Same friend had had me download MSN messenger and I ended up with MSN toolbar. I was not happy camper. If I wanted the toolbar I would have attempted to install.

Well, now I was irritated with all this nonsense so I thought I would search out music downloads on Google UK and run through a few of the processes of the big names just for the hell of it to see how easy they were to use.

All I wanted was a flippin' tune!

So I tried MSN. Must use Internet Explorer ... blah, blah, blah. Ok, done. What now? I need to sign in with a Passport. Subscription. Feck off! Not gonna happen. Especially not after the nonsense with Yahoo.

Ah, what's next ... Virgin. Surely they (a record label) would make it easier? Nope. Affiliate links to various music download sites or that shitty subscription model again. Sod it.

Napster. I just want a feckin' tune!!! Whoopee doo if you offer 2 million tracks, I only want ONE. Ya hear me?? ONE!!! And you can stick that bloody subscription model up your usb port!

Tescodownloads (I'm in the UK) ... oh, get a grip! I can only copy the music 3 times??! So that must mean proprietary software needs installing? Yeah, we all know what happened with Sony and the rootkit fiasco. I dinnae think so!

Just let me search for the music I want, buy it, download it and copy the damn thing as many times as I want to. In any format I want to.

    I have kids for fecksake!

By the time I've copied what they want into their various mp3 players (note the multiple - they have more than one), burned it to disc as a hard copy (so to speak) and ripped it into Windows Media Player (easier than buggering about locating different folders), my 'copy-allocation' is far behind. And anyway, your sign-up process doesn't work without entering the Tesco Clubcard number so you can SPY ON ME some more, so you can go get f*cked as well.

    What's left?

Ah, who cares. Apple iTunes, here I come.

Can I search without sending in a copy of my birth certificate and passport? Yes.
Can I burn to disc? Yes.
Can I keep in mp3 format? Yes.
Do I need to sell my firstborn? No.
What's involved? Download iTunesSetup and run it.
What about buying a tune? Easy. Fill in the form with my details (expected) and voila! The tune starts downloading.

I HAVE IT! I HAVE IT! IT'S MINE!

So if you want legal music downloads, go to iTunes. They make it EASY.

    And I'm an experienced user.

    Yahoo dissapoints me recently too.
For example today I've found out the search function in email is disabled or just broken, anyways it doesn't work..

Should I just go and check all my thousands of emails from the past 3 years to find the info I'm looking for?

    mcfox,

Thanks for the rant...you made my day. I find it incredibly frusrating when any software or web service tries to make you download a bunch of extra crap before you can use their stuff. I own an IT business, and we spend so much time cleaning out users machines (business computers no less!) because users have no frickin clue as to what is going on...they just answer yes to everything. Can you imagine getting a machine with Yahoo, Google, and MSN toolbars installed, with multiple players each trying to take control over the default settings on certain file extensions. It is a nightmare. No wonder some people have problems!

Anyway, now you got me started.

    Thanks again for the chuckle.

Yeah, I found it a huge surprise when people told me I am not allowed to hook up the neighbors cable, phone line and electricity to my house but I was shocked when people said you have to pay for music... :p

In all honestly I have never paid for music in my life, it was always bootlegs back in the day. and now this is like 9 years online of heavy downloading. Not that law would really matter cause it doesnt concern me as proof is very limited in these cases but canada actually allows it so thats a plus :D

That's kinda the point. If I want to download free (illegal) music, a quick search and rummage about and there it is. Maybe take 10 minutes max if it's a tricky one to find. Download it, scan it, bang. It's yours and it never cost a dime.

This causes the music industry to throw its collective hands up in horror; whether it be on the $20 million yacht or in the $30 million mansion; the hands get wrung because of illegal downloading, lawyers get called, and some poor mother who knows nothing about computers gets her ass dragged into court and sued for thousands because her 14 year-old got a bit carried away with the file sharing.

Contrast a legal download (iTunes aside) and first off the company, whether it be Yahoo, MSN or whatever, try to hijack your computer and dump a load of useless shit on it right after you've Agreed to the TOS that see you getting sent to a Gulag in deepest Siberia if you make 4 copies instead of 3 of the music you just bought and paid for.

Then every effort is made to force you into a subscription you don't want ... and best of all, you don't even know what the f*ck you will have access to because you have to sign up for the subscription before you get a proper look.

Not forgetting the multi-page forms asking lots of personal info they don't need. What bloody difference does it make if I'm 16 or 97? I only want to listen to music, not attempt a loaded-diaper-Blitzkrieg on the music industry.

And I haven't even gotten as far as getting my hands on a copy of anything at this stage, never mind burned a copy.

This is legal, paid-for music I'm after!

If I'd went for the illegal variety my AntiVirus software and various scanners would shield me from malicious crap. As it is I must custom install everything, lest I want toolbars and messengers plopping themselves like an unwelcome dog turd on the bathroom floor awaiting the barefooted, half-asleep owner.

    Bah.

If you want to buy Indian music, you can go to www.crimsonbay.com! :D Then again, you probably don't! You have a few options:
    1. Try iTunes
    2. Buy the CD from Amazon
    3. Go back to Yahoo and give it another shot (maybe email their helpdesk). This is (believe it or not) the best option.

Eventually, I did and found it to be an outstanding service! Top class. Easy. Apple have it right. 10/10
LOL. What's so funny about that is I could've jumped into the car, nipped down to the local shops, bought the (or any) CD and been back home in ten minutes. Literally. It took me an hour and a half messing about with Yahoo before I eventually gave up.
    Never gonna happen.

I used Yahoo Launch and have done for a long time now but loyalty is a funny thing. It's probably why I was persuaded to give Yahoo Music Engine a go, however, since in my mind that trust element has been broken by Yahoo because of all the difficulties and 'software-stuffing' I will never use their pay-for music service. Ever.

Apple iTunes stepped in with iTunes and provided exactly what I wanted without the aggravation. They have therefore earned my custom and customer loyalty.
