Yes Shannon, that is the key question. We started out with this experiment to prove that any link was a good link, and that it didn't matter whether it came from a relevant page, nor did it matter if many links came from a very few sites, and additionally it didn't matter if all the link used identical anchor text.

Initially we seem to prove exactly those points. We drove the experimental page as high as #17 I believe, in a very short time. But then it appears that Google started to make changes.

What is difficult to tell is whether the current results are the result of permanent changes in the way google is evaluating links or simply a temporary bug or glitch in its algorithms.

We have seem what appeared to be temporary glitches before. And the thing that makes one wonder is that the current demotion of some sites is not consistent. I have sites that have links from non themed pages located on a very few sites that have not been affected at all by this current situation.

But let's look at the experimental page as an example. If Google has really, and intentional, changed their evaluation of links how have they done it.

    1. Have they sudden put much more emphasis on links from thematically related pages?

    2. Have they devalued links from the same site or domain, or even IP block?

    3. Have they devalued links for using the same anchor text excessively?

    4. Or have they done all of these things?

The experimental page is "guilty" of all of these things -- no links from relevant pages, and very few linking domains, and identical anchor text on all links.

Interesting point. I have one page which has internal links, with the same anchor text what I think could be excessively and it took longer to get a PR (3 months longer than other pages) and is being a right pain in the arse to SEO, i.e. crap serps.

Also, I have just aquired, 25 PR7 links to one of my websites, from the same domain, the site is currently PR6, it'll be interesting to see if the PR increases or if the serps take a nose dive.

    Darren :)
