I highly recommend aaa logo creation software, as Ive tried most available and this one is the best designed and the most functional. Not the cheapest, but no terribly expensive at about $70. My only complaint is that there doesnt seem to be a cheaper upgrade option for the new versions if you already have the software. The others arent really worth any money, imo, only if you get them free. Good logo design is too expensive for me, and i was getting crap from the real cheap guys. I designed a killer logo with the aaa software after a little practice..check it out. btw, i have no relation with this company, but im sure they will be pleased w this endorsement..

Usualy logo are designed on Corel Draw, Photoshop and illustrator, but as you said you want free alternatives.
I will suggest you to try "Gimp", Its great and free to use as well.

well if you're willing to spend some money..you could get a professional logo at the buy and sell forum for $5-$10...or even free.

yeah, the other responders are correct that illustrator/inkscape are what you would use if you were a professional, and designing everything from scratch. I have these programs but have no idea how to use them yet. My above recommendation is if you want a plug and play option, with a much shorter learning curve, and preloaded logo templates and graphic icons.

Free graphic creation software includes GIMP and Inkscape. You can design the logo on GIMP and vectorize it on Inkscape.
