Looking for ftp software

I'm looking for ftp software with a specific feature. I want to be able to upload a whole directory tree with almost 14,000 files in it to shared hosting webservers. This means it needs to be ftp protocol as some shared webservers only offer that. Most of the time I do this the upload dies and the garbage that comes with Windows won't restart automaticaly, and I have to start from the begining as it won't tell me which files made it or didn't. So I have to upload in smaller batches, which means I have to babysit it.

I need an ftp client that can handle that big of a directory structure, and will automatically restart from where it left off when it times out or something, and keep going till all files are uploaded. I would prefer something that can be used on a Windows 2000 computer as that is what I have to work with as a spare, but it could also be XP if need be, or I'd even consider trying to find room for a Linux box it I really have to.

    Any suggestions?

Filezilla is the most obvious choice, but the best thing to do is just research the internet and find one that's tailored to your needs and suits you.

Do you have Keep Alive, Autoconnect and Connect Retry on? Also some ftp apps have a compare and synchronize feature, I think that can help you out so you wont have to start from the very beginning always. I know Core FTP has this.

Rs-sales, that is what I was thinking, but I figured it might be prudent to ask for advice in where to start looking. Why re invent the wheel?

Jamespv85, there are no such settings that I can find. I'll have to look into core FTP.

Renovato, thanks for the suggestion, I will have to look at it.

Filezilla looks like it will not work with Windows 2000, so I will look at a few others. Thanks for the suggestions.

Try WinSCP. It has transfer to add queue feature which is pretty good.

Download FileZila (Free ) or CoreFTP (Free and Pro versions ) softwares if you are on Windows . Most web hosting control panels including cPanel provides auto configuration for these FTP clients .

    Hi all,

If you are in Windows platform, Filezilla is the best choice. If you use Linux then the best option is gFTP. it's a multi-threaded ftp client for Unix like systems. It's a Free and Open Source Software and you can just install it to your distribution.

    Debian based systems

    # apt-get install gftp

    RPM based

    #urpmi gftp

    HTH

Filezilla is cool and free, but it doesnt connect two FTP at the same time. Server-Server transfers are not possible as well. I have been a all time fav for cutefTP, changed back to Filezilla seeing the hype about it. then had to go back to CuteFTP Pro sensing what i have missed.

If am not alone, i have sometimes faced strange errors while i am reuploading the same file again and again. I have to remove the file from remote server and upload again else the file doesnt upload. anyone faced this with filezilla, and any possible fixes?

I am using Cuteftp from last 7-8 years without any problem. Like "pepprs" says it supports resume for multiple simul connections/servers, so it should fix the problem you are facing now.

Filezilla is free, kick ass, and when you upload a large amount of files it shows you a queue of the files being uploaded. If there are any errors it will tell you. You can even import and export the queue or cancel specific items while the queue is being uploaded.

I think this is the only FTP app that does this and is great for diagnosing issues with large uploads.
