Looking for payment processor for online payments for teaching website

    I am setting up an online Teaching website and need to have the ability to accept online payments from different parts of the world. The website will be based out of Canadian HO. Typical payments will be in $1xx to $2xxx range.We have no trading history as a start up and am really struggling to find a suitable payment processor. I know about Paypal as one option but want to use different payment processor.
    can someone please suggest me what kind of shopping cart I should ask the web designer to be install in my website for accepting online payments? Do I need to get a merchant account (I prefer 3rd party processor)? What online processors are well known in Canada ?
    I will really be thankful for any help or hints on how to proceed. Thanks in advance to anyone who can spare a few moments.
