Looking for some info on link sales, how they work, what to charge, etc.

Looking into managing my own link sales and I was curious if there was a thread (did a search but all I got was a bunch of WTB or WTS threads) detailing the marketability of links and how it all works? I see sitewides selling for more, but hear that single front page ones are better (as your link doesn't compete with other sitewide links maybe?)?

New to the whole thing... anyone mind tossing me a link (no pun intended) or pointing me to a good reference? Can't seem to find the right search phrase to get what I'm looking for :(

Basically, just looking for info to decide whether I should offer site wide links, localized links, and why. I imagine a sitewide link would be ideal, but I believe I've seen some threads with folks specifically looking for NON-sitewide links?

As far as i know, there are four factor for choosing homepage only backlink to sitewide one:

    1. Characteristic of backlinks: Most of the backlinks of a domain points to homepage so PR juice is mostly available on the homepage.

    2. Google Penalty: There is a possibility to get penalty from Google if you get too much sitewide links.

    3. Traffic: Sitewide links are mostly valuable for traffic. So if someone want to get traffic from his niche, he would like to buy sitewide links from authority sites.

    4. How google see sitewide links?: Google does not count all of the backlinks on all pages if your link is sitewide. So this makes getting sitewide links questionable.

Because of these factors, it seems that webmasters prefer to buy homepage-only links..

If you ask me what to do: I did not start to sell links on my sites. I will do that after next google update and i am sure i will think about this choice myself too. But i plan to use TLA. Since they decide on the value of a homepage/sitewide link, i will decide whether it worths to sell sitewide links or not. If i think that it does not worth, i will keep sitewide positions to my own related sites and sell only homepage links.
