** Kindly note that if you don't take the time to read this posting, I won't take the time to respond to you and you'll be eliminating your chances of getting the gig as well as wasting both of our time **

    Please note:
    - I don't care where you're from, as long as you're able to write in English and it will make sense to a western audience. You need great grammar and writing abilities, so let's be honest with ourselves and save everyone some time.
    - I'm expecting a sample article as per my requirements, if you're not willing to write me a sample then that's that.

Alright, with all the unpleasantries out of the way... Make sure you mention "potatoe salad" in your pm so I know you took the time to read this.

I need news/current events type articles, 300-600 words, in the following niches...
    ~ Comedy
    ~ Martial arts
    ~ Entrepreneurship
    ~ Hiphop and rap music

These are for quality web properties, I'm looking for experienced writers who know their stuff. If you know how to post in wordpress, that's an asset.

So here's what I would like all interested parties to do...

Pick one of those 4 niches that you feel you're strongest in, and write a 300 word article on some recent news in that niche. I want to see how you handle headlines that will make people click, and how you're able to work with minimal direction since a lot of the time the order will be like "Alright, I need 5 news articles in X niche.. go!"

These are long-term positions so please submit your sample as per the requirements above, along with your pricing schedule.

Thank you kindly and please PM me if you have any questions.

I think you forgot to mention your budget for this.

You obviously spent a lot of time on this thread weeding out everything that might waste your time. This is perfectly understandable, but then also do us writers the same courtesy and add the rates you are prepared to pay for the job. that way we can also quickly determine if we would be wasting our time by responding or not.

    Thx ;)

Well, I would give a fair assumption to say yes due to the fact he wants an unpaid trial article.

Honestly, you're going to scare a majority of the Native English writers away with that requirement.

I would tend to agree with you on this. The majority of the writers the OP is looking for, would not waste their time writing a free 300 word article. Myself included.

Are you going to pay applicants for the article they submit as an example of their abilities? Are applicants permitted to link you to a portfolio or directly to an article that meets your criteria for you to review? Afterall, you want to use the example article to judge a writers ability, so linking to an article or articles that are relevant to what you are looking for, should be acceptable. If not, then one would have to wonder what your intentions are by requesting applicants write a free sample article for you.

No, I spent about 5 minutes writing this thread, not a lot of time but thanks for saying it looks like it took a long time, I appreciate the implication, that's kind of you to say. The amount I'm paying each writer depends entirely on how good of a writer they are, hence asking for a sample.

I didn't forget to include the budget. My overall budget for content is absolutely nobody else's business but my own and those I work closely with (And the tax man, of course.). If you're referring to what I'll pay per article, as I said, that depends on the writer. Surely as a quality writer you can understand that not everybody's words are as valuable as yours, right? It's a shame its not worth your time to submit a proposal, since you seem more capable of stringing a sentence together than the majority of applicants thus far, and I would have been happy to get deeper into project details with you. I don't imagine it would have taken up any more of your time to simply ask me for clarifications in a PM than it took you to respond here, fair? Do get in touch if you have a change of heart.

I've paid for samples from dozens of writers from here and the VAST majority were absolute trash, and a lot of them are just spun garbage that the writers are trying to pass off as their own - Forgive me if my patience is wearing a bit thin, it tends to get that way after being scammed by dozen of "writers" (This should anger the quality writers, too, knowing that there are tons of people out there stealing their content and trying to pass it off as their own). I'm happy to pay for the samples IF they are up to par, but not before seeing them - I've wasted a lot of money that way by giving writers the benefit of the doubt. I'm a serious client and I'm looking to deal with honest writers.

If spending a few minutes to write 300 words that could land you an on-going gig with somebody who publishes a lot of content isn't worth your time, I would like to personally thank you graciously for taking the time to respond to this thread.

You seem like someone else who's capable of writing decent content, so if you're interested in discussing this further please don't hesitate to get in touch. I'll leave that up to you if you're interested, I would hate to waste your time.

Ideally looking at a portfolio would mean something, but there's two reasons that I want a custom sample. The first one is because I need to ensure they are able to write for my projects in particular, the fact that they wrote in a similar niche in the past doesn't really matter to me. Secondly, you may be surprised how many people are faking their portfolios... As in, great content in their portfolio, but in the actual body of their communication it's obvious it's not coming from the same writers. As I have said to the other two people previously, you seem like another great writer.

If you're implying that by asking for a sample article my intentions are anything other than screening applicants to ensure they're actually writing unique, non-plagiarized content, you are gravely mistaken my friend. I'm asking for articles on current events, since that's what most of my projects entail, and it's a bit harder to fake that than it is to put together a portfolio of random content. So far, 3 out of 3 samples I've received have been blatantly plagiarized and spun - just to give you a bit of an idea what I'm dealing with :)

I wish one of you three would have expressed interest in getting a writing gig rather than crashing my thread, I believe all of you would have been perfect candidates for the position. If you're interested, send me your rates and whether you're willing to write a sample under the condition that if it's unusable, I don't have to pay for it.

A final thought for all the writers who are actually offering unique and quality content --- You're getting out-hustled by the people trying to pass-off low quality content. I'm looking for quality, so don't be shy to get in touch if that's what you're offering. If you feel that writing a sample is below you, that's a shame but I wish you the best of luck. :)

Here's an open offer to Text Services, PopaWoody and Kraven 2 - I would like to offer $10 to hire any one of you three to re-write this thread in a way that will attract higher-quality writers, taking into consideration the points I have made above. The original post is 289 words, so let's say maximum of 300 words for this gig. Interested? PM me.

Basically, the goal is to weed-out the dishonest "writers", without causing the quality writers to feel alienated. I did a bad job of that the first time around, since I seemed to annoy the very writers I was trying to attract to the point of them replying to the thread to question my motives, rather than replying to learn more about the job - and I apologize for that.

LOL that's what I get for leaving this thread alone for a bit :D

Of course I can not speak for my esteemed colleagues who also replied in this thread, but me, I think you have misread a little.

I was by no means offended by your post, in fact I agree with most of it. From a buyers point of view I can certainly understand where you are coming from. However, it is not much better on the other side, where us writers get to deal with tons of potential buyers all opening up with threads similar like yours and then after taking the PM route we discover we are dealing with just another cheapskate expecting award winning quality at something like $ 0.60/100 words.

You can take it from me that after doing this since 2006 I got my fair share of "buyers" like that(And sent them all walking, but that is another topic for another thread.). So just like you get fed up with writers who are in reality no more then "word monkeys" who can barely operate a keyboard, let alone string sentences together that actually make sense, we get just as fed up with buyers expecting the world for mere cents on a dollar.

My post was intended not to bust your chops, but simply for all "real" writers to be able to quickly determine if writing up that sample was worth it or not. Of course your budget for projects is none of my business, I meant the budget you were prepared to use on the writer(s) of your choice.

I think the above requires no further explanation, the point is clear. Now on to the the rest of this thread :)

As for your challenge, that would be a hard one, simply because I do not believe you did such a bad job there. It merely needs a little more info for the writers who possess the talents you are looking for. What your post needs is an estimate of the rates you are thinking about. With emphasis on estimate, nothing has to be set in stone as it just an indication whether or not the job is interesting for the writers with the required skills. That is all it needs in my opinion.

This being said, I think it is already clear that we have arrived at the part where I don't agree with my colleagues here. I do not have a problem with writing up a sample, not even a free one. Not everything I do comes with a price tag and if a good business relationship comes out of it, then it is well worth it in my opinion.

Last, I must say that I really like the way you have handled this thread. Just beneath the surface of your replies hides a sense of humor quite similar to my own. A little cynical, with a touch of sarcasm. I like it :D

Well, it appears that in my enthusiasm I went well above the 300 words limit you proposed, but then again this reply wasn't really the challenge you put out either. If you still would like me to contact you privately, just let me know(Or send me a PM). I think we established that you are not among the cheapskates I mentioned in this reply ;)

    Cheers!

I wasn't trying to ruin your thread or bash you in any sort of way. Writers have to go through the screening process as well. Some buyers are horrible for various reasons. My questions were to clarify a few things. It's not the first time someone has come here asking for applicants to write a custom sample article with no mention of compensation for doing so. Over the years, I've come across a few "buyers" who make posts asking for custom samples and they are nothing more than article collectors.

I understand that there are a lot of not so great "writers" out there. I understand not wanting to pay a writer up front for writing a custom sample article. I wouldn't either. It's just that quality writers have been burned in the past too. When there is no mention that you are willing to pay for the custom sample article if accepted, it makes the quality writers a little leary. Combine that with no mention of a budget, and many writers will not bother applying.

I understand that what you are offering to pay a writer is based on skill level. That's fair. What you can do in a post is write something to the effect of, "rate/word is dependent upon the writers ability. I'm offering between $1.00/100 words to $5.00/100 words. I will discuss exact $/word with each writer individually." What the quality writer will see is that you are willing to pay a fair rate/word and that you are open to a discussion concerning rate/word. Combine that with an offer to pay the writer for the custom article sample, and you will be more likely to attract the quality of writer you seek.

Things just go a little easier for both sides if buyers took the time to make detailed job offers, including the important points to attract the quality of writers they seek. It doesn't mean a buyer isn't going to get flooded with garbage writers, but in the mix will be some quality writers as well.

This turn a turn for the positive, very interesting discussing and I must say, the quality of applicants is through the roof this morning - Thanks to everyone who took the time, I'll do my best to get in touch with everyone and see what we can work out!

To anyone who's inquiring if the position is still open - It will always be open, I'm always in need of quality writers and I like to match people up in the niche that they're most knowledgeable and strongest in, so even if I don't have anything for everyone today - Don't be shy to reach out and let me know your strongest niches because I'm starting new web properties quite frequently.

    Regards

Just wondering how you would recognize 'great grammar' if it were to find you, being that your all-important requisite tagline is misspelled.

I'm not the one looking for a writing job, ma'am. Are you interested, or just here to crash my thread over a spelling mistake?

Thanks for your concern, I know how to spell the word potato.. LMAO... Are you looking for a proof reading gig, or just writing? Let's chat.

Me? *innocent look* Crash a thread? Never! It was a sincere question. Sort of. :D

I'm afraid I can't say whether I'm interested in your project, being that you've been elusive about the details of payment and such - but I'm definitely not interested in providing a custom sample on spec.

Fascinating... I'd basically given up on DP as a good source for clients... until now, that is.

It would appear that there are still decent people willing to pay a writer a decent wage. It's really unfortunate that DP is awash with clients looking for cheap writers and "writers" willing to accept pennies for their hard work. @agrius, thanks for being one of the rare decent clients on DP. I hope this place gets more people like you.

Oh... and if you still need a decent writer, please get in touch (skype ID: contentsolutions). Shameless plug, I know ;). But you do seem like someone I'd like to work with.
