Thanks for the replies and PMs everybody, I'm good to go for now so I won't be checking this thread anymore.

I've had a great response, some excellent writers (And some not-so-great writers but I still respect them for trying, it's got to be tough to write in English when it's not your first language.)

Some of the writers who I imagine have a bit more business-sense were happy to pass along custom samples, others would message me saying they read the entire thread but still send a "canned" sample of something they wrote years ago - Interesting :).

Just about everyone who wrote a custom sample ended up getting an order from me, I imagine they would all say it was well worth it. Some refused to let me see how well they would perform before I sent payment, and in a few cases I was accommodating because I would tell they were at least half-decent.

Of course, they will always be people trying to pass-off clumsily re-written articles as their own, I called a few of them out on it by linking them to the articles they ripped off, others I just let it slide because it's not worth the time.

A MESSAGE TO THE QUALITY WRITERS OUT THERE......
If you're a legitimate writer, who has a strong command of the language in which you're selling content, and you are writing unique and original content that actually adds value to the reader - Don't get into a race-to-the-bottom with the people who are trying to pass off stolen or spun content as their own. You don't have to compete with them, there is a huge demand for REAL content. Line yourself up with publishers who know what they are doing. Somebody who needs to spend $2 for 500 words in order to get a return on their investment is a joker. Line yourself up with the type of publishers who can make a positive ROI and still pay you a fair amount. It's just a matter of getting your content into their hands, whether it's offering a custom sample or a discount on the first order or whatever it takes - Let your work speak for itself and don't try to compete on price with the scammers... Compete on QUALITY and you'll find the right type of clients, and you'll win every time.

I still haven't heard from the lady who had a problem with the way I spelled "potatoe", I hope to hear back from her if she's interested in the writing gig still. If all you're able to take away from this thread is that I spelled "potatoe" wrong intentionally, and somehow that means I'm not able to tell whether a writer is decent or not, well.. Good luck with your business and I hope you find the type of clients you're looking for.

All in all this was an interesting thread from my point of view, and I have a few new writers on staff that I'm VERY excited to continue working with.
