Mac G4 - Worth having?

A client of mine has just bought a couple of Mac G5s and offered me a deal on a Mac G4. Now I don't really *need* this G4 with 2 PCs and a laptop but thought that if it's a decent enough deal it'd be fun for the experience and could even be my graphics workstation...

Does anyone have a Mac and PC studio? Any issues I might encounter? Any advice? Is this worth having this G4 if just to tentatively dip my toe in the waters of the Mac world?

I like the mac have five and one pc notebook - Built pc clones for 18 years and really just needed a change...it's been great..

 

It's worth having even just for the geek factor.

I've got a PC desktop runing Linux and WinXP in dual boot and Powerbook at home. Run WinXP in the office but am right now doing some Linux stuff on our webhost. The 3 OSes run together just fine though I haven't started to let my Mac talk with my PC a lot yet.

 

With the new Mac comming out now with intel 5 times faster then the old one NO WAY you should buy the old one. Mac is fine to have if you work with grapic but not web. At home its a lovley toy i love mac but but it need more software.

Ah, interesting, I think that'll be the important factor, doing graphics on the Mac and grabbing them from the desktop PC though I wonder if I'll need a home server at some time and a huge extension for my desk too?

The Mac I'm looking to be my graphics machine, so that'll be fine With DW8 needing a rec'd min of 1gb ram I've been migrating from a 500Mb desktop to a 2GB laptop so there's no danger of doing too much web work from the Mac, plus I'd have to get a Mac version of DW8 anyway

I was a windows junkie for years (Although funnily enough, this was my first computer) and I am so pleased I made the transition...

I've got a PowerBook G4 and a PowerPC g4, and run a windows machine at home too - Our office is all mac, but we do have a windows box for testing and stuff and it never has any issues with connectivity or whatever.

Get it - You'll find yourself working on it more and more than on the PC.

 

Wow, at least you had a mouse with your first computer. I had to plug an extra 16k ram on the back of mine.

would you buy a used car?? if yes then buy it, but I like new cars myself get a G5

 

LOL I can't really justify the expense of a new G5 just yet, but if I like the G4 then maybe I'll be motivated to save up for one

 

I prefer PCs in general.They are typically cheaper and easier to maintain than macs.

 

I work with both PCs and Macs every day. I take care of 10 PCs and two Windows servers at work, and two Macs (for 12 years) and a PC at home. I'd say that day-to-day they are the same to maintain--as long as you keep your virus software up to date on those PC's! Both are complex machines and need periodic care.

But the Mac OS is more polished and a more pleasant operating experience in general. Definitely worth having at least one.

 

I have to admit I have accumulated tons of software & hardware for PCs over the years so to get serious with a Mac would involve the injection of more ca$h...

That sounds like another "yes" vote then OK, I'm gonna have to check out the prices on the second hand market now and see what sorta deal my client will do; if he can afford G5s then he can afford to let this one go for a reasonable price

 

I'm a PC user myself... always have been.

Macs look great. Since I have never used one, I can't comment on them. I can however say that for *work* (web, programming & word processing stuff) my PC is more than enough.

If you think the Mac will help your productivity, or help you enjoy the work more than the PC, go for it. Really it's your money and if you feel like buying a new toy then go for it.
