It all depends on the rates that you are getting paid as a writer. Sometimes you DO have free time on your hands, and may find something like making a hundred bucks one day for several articles being worth it.

This is true. Like I said, even I take a few low paying jobs here and there when I'm going through a slump. But every day, writing 50 or 100 articles per day for one or two bucks per article is ridiculous. It lowers the overall standards of the profession, and lower rates for writers who value their time at more than a dollar an hour, or whatnot.

Personally I have purchased about 200 (give or take a few) articles from elance writers. Paid any where from $3.00 USD to $50.00 (writer in U.S.A.) - they were all crap or least sub standard - when you hire someone to write about your niche market - they will not have the passion you have (if you have any to begin with) - they do not know the "language" of the industry you are working with (buzz words, technical terms, etc) - and last they do not have a vested interest in seeing you succeed. -

I can see in the very near future - a niche writer for every industry on the web - just like doctors and lawyers specialize in certain disciplines. So will online article writers...

Personally would love to have a top flight mortgage content sight – but guess what – just cannot get excited about telling someone how to do paperwork – and dance around for the lender to give them a home loan. Just do not have the passion.

Knowing a couple of guys working in the mortgage biz – have told them many times they should help people online and pepper their help with ppc ads. But they will not believe me or they are not writers or do not want to.

Reading back on this post – I should specialize in random spouting and soapbox abuse!

With proper, thorough research, professional writers concerned with the quality of work will take the time to learn your market, the lingo, etc. It is true that many writers refuse to take the time to create a piece that shines, but most writers that I have had the experience of working with in the past have all exemplified the qualities that an exceptional writer needs to have in order to stand out within the marketplace.

With writing, you get what you pay for... If your just looking for a article loaded with keywords and articles that don't have a purpose, then you can expect to pay $4 an article. If your looking to build a website that contains "useful" information and well written work, expect to pay a lot more.

Not everyone can write although everyone thinks they can. With all this said its very possible to make a living online writing articles, but it involves ignoring the people that are looking for cheap content and look for the customers that are willing to pay for good work. I learned a long time ago I couldn’t write and I also learned cheap content is a bad investment when buying articles. I did the whole adsense/content websites and learned my lesson just like a lot of other people will.

I wholeheartedly agree, Constant Content. In writing, you DO get what you pay for. Cheaper articles means cheaper quality for you, sad but true. However, my personal philosophy is that high quality articles are worth the investment. Visitors to your website don't want to be bombarded with poor spelling, countless grammatical errors and a variety of other things.

How do you ensure that the articles that somebody has written for you has not been picked up as it is from internet.

What about sites like About.com? I hear they pay their writers pretty well. Although it seems like it's pretty competitive to get in.

If you can write good articles, then you can always monetize them with Adsense. Create a blog and start posting your articles there with adsense all around. Of course, there are writers who get paid per artcile, but the amount is not much. The idea should be to create multiple income streams for the same articles.

I'm a pretty fair writer but a terrible researcher (and typist). So when I write about familiar topics I do okay. But for my own websites which fall outside my areas of expertise, I have to hire freelancers.

I generally come up with a title for the writer, and have sometimes provided a brief suggested outline. If I'm looking for a series of articles, I will usually ask for xxxx words and xx articles and let the writer decide what works best in their opinion.

Then it's very frustrating when I get those lowball bids. I figure that a $5 bid for a 500 word article will result in an extremely poor result.

So when I see bids ranging from $5 to $50, where do I draw the line? (I usually draw mine at about $15-25). But even then, is the price simply higher or the article actually better?

I run every article I buy through copyscape. Then I take what I consider to be key phrases and sentences and do a "" type search on a SE. It is amazing how many will not pass those tests. So as a result, I will not pay a deposit unless I have had good experiences with the writer.

I prefer to use the same writers over and over again but if the writer is extremely busy, or my topic falls too far from their area of expertise, I have to go shopping .. and I hate that.

I'm also curious what the good quality writers here think is a commercially reasonable per woud price for say .. a suite of article totalling 5,000 words, 500 to 800 words per.

old_expat, article prices vary depending on a number of factors. All writers must take into account their experience, their expertise on the subject matter, how many words the article will contain, the depth of research involved, etc. As such, pricing is often a difficult, even draining procedure especially when you have companies that feel 2.00 for a 1,000 word article is acceptable. I'm glad to hear that there are still those who value a writer's time and skill; they are out there, but these jobs can be hard to come by, especially when the writing market is so competitive.
