Make this 2.3mb picture into a web friendley picture?

    I have this picture of an orchid I took with my 7 mega pixel camera and it creates these files as 2.3 megs or more.

    How do I shrink the size of the picture to make it web friendley...I'm assuming web friendley is around 56 kb? or 32 kb in terms of file size?

    I have adobe photo shop. Can anybody suggest how I go about shrinking the size? I'm a newbie at web design.

    Those are some really nice pictures and by shrinking them down you are going to lose a lot of quality. I would have your camera take smaller resolution pictures.

    this is an easy question. Open the image... go to

    image: image size...:

    change the size to 700 pixels wide or so.

    file:save as:

    save the image as a gif or jpeg

    the end. this makes it 95kb as a jpeg file.

    Okay thanks for everyones help...I knew I could shrink those monster photos sizes.

    Is 95k still considered a large size for the internet? I have a cable modem so I don't really notice lag times.

    You should pity those on dial-up... There are still many Internet users out there that uses slow connections...
    The shrinking process should be carried out not to determine the size but rather the tolerable quality loss...

    The thing is that first you need to know the size the phot needs when displayed on the web.

    But ok, the really thing is how to do it with photoshop.

    When you know the size, resize the image: In photoshop Image -> Image size.

    and then: File -> Save for the Web -> choose jpg and play with the quality until the ratio kb/photo quality is fine for you.

    Depending on what you need you could get size of 10kb or lower, whihc should be ok for dial up conections (but take care of not putting to many ofthose in the same page)

    I just loaded it onto the main page of my site. http://www.orchidgeeks.com/
    The quality is still pretty close to the original...of course you can't zoom in on it too much. I'm happy though ;)
