Making transparant image - Does anyone know how to save the file?

I use Photoshop 6.0 and have my image made as a transparancy. It's currently in PSD format and I can see the checkerboard that appears behind or underneath the image and is there anything I need to do before sizing it and saving it in TIFF format? Help appreciated

You can save it as PSD or GIF to maintain transparency. However I recommend PNG.
