First Caryl I wanted to rep you for the record keeping you do. (got to spread it around first) It's extraordinary. Thank you. You have made this experiment "must reading"

Very revealing information. It shows turmoil...but dammit...why.

With each "update" many sites are freed from the sandbox. That we see. With that there will probably be some ultimate movement in the serps.

That dc shows dramatic changes. We haven't been able to make heads or tails of the changes during updates before though.

From my sites and there competition I was thinking that the update dc's may be evaluating newer links/site structure etc.

Knowing that I have more focused new links than some competitors I thought that might be one case...but when checking it with another webmaste that is not his example.

Love to hear from others and other ideas!

Things are really looking good to me right now . With some 100 KW and phrases I can now see better rankings than ever...right across the board. Anyone else seeing this sort of trend? I have noticed a steady incline in SERPS over the last 24 hours!

Looks like things are starting to settle down. What a wild ride so far - I had several sites disappear and now reappear in Google.

 

Well, the majority of the Datacenters are now returning results in the "normal" range.

BUT the 66.102.9.* & 66.102.11.* Datacenters have been all over the place for my main Keyword for days now.

In fact, using the Datacenter Watch Tool (link below in my sig) on the .99 bank of Datacenters right now, I'm getting 4 distinct sets of results. My position is the same on many of them HOWEVER the other sites are all over the place.

Clearly, there are many different stages to this fiasco.

(a quickie post for those SEOs who can’t resist watching data centers)

As Jagger1 and Jagger2 wind down and Jagger3 is visible at 66.102.9.104, I wanted to recap where things stand.

Jagger1 was visible at most data centers starting around 10/16/05. A second, refreshed version of Jagger1 was visible recently at 66.102.7.104 and was at all data centers by 11/7/05.
Jagger2 was visible starting at 66.102.9.104 starting around 10/27/05. Jagger2 was visible at all data centers by 11/6/05.
Jagger3 was visible starting at 66.102.9.104 around 11/4/2005. Jagger3 is not widely visible yet (it might also be at 216.239.51.104), but I expect it migrate to other data centers over time.
Q: Is the update winding down?
A: It’s starting to. Recall that all of Jagger1/2/3 are separate changes. Jagger1 and 2 are done, and you can see what Jagger3 will look like at 66.102.9.104.

Q: Do you still want spam reports if I see things like hidden text, hidden links, etc.?
A: Absolutely. We’re working through the reports that we’ve received, but I’d love to have more. Just to repeat, you can do a spam report at http://www.google.com/contact/spamreport.html with the keyword “jagger3″ and we’ll check it out.

It looks like Jagger 1 hit the site around 10/9; a week earlier than he reports. Pre jagger?

BUT Matt Cutts and Google Guy are just "spinning" BULLSHIT!!!!

If you look at the results I have posted (see link below) you will see that this site started recording "abnornal" results back on September 22nd.

I agree mcdar. Why would they need to be accurate on this at all? I think they are happy to give general information just to appease webmasters during an update.

And why do updates take so long?!

Carly, have you every done a link analysis of your site and the sites that don't shift around for your keyword? You might find some interesting findings of what is the anchor text that links back for those stable sites.

 

This page has at least 4000 actual links pointing to it.

Google currently reports only 167 links to the page.

Undoubtedly, Google only reports a small fraction of actual links pointing to any given site.

Google, it seems, has decided to obscure accurate information from the public which, in turn, has made it difficult, at best, to derive any accurate analysis at this time.

 

I've been following this closely. I guess I was being nice, pointing to larger changes on 10/9 rather than the initial changes Caryl tracked that started in September.

I think those guys would be dumb to spin bullshit. Too many webmasters follow what they say. Could be...but if they were spinning crap it would be picked up by lots of webmasters, though nobody (or nobody I know) has tracked this like you (to our benefit).

I still keep coming back to something that bugs me. I think the page is "fragile" relative to the keyword phrase, sleeping bags. Going back to this post, http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showpost.php?p=420054&postcount=2407, where you identified how 1/2 the sites in the "settled top ten" were being jerked around in the update by that dc...still none of them had as distorted rankings and allinanchor as the experiment page.

It keeps bugging me. Guess I should shut my mouth and just research it.

Anyways hope this settles and the site bounces back into the top ten.

Please give me an example, from either of them, where they actually said anything substantial that they could be pinned down on.

Their posts read more like that of a Fortune Teller using such generalities that most anything could be interpreted into verifying their statements.

I, myself, went much further out on a limb making assertions from the beginning, based on Google's history, that I could have been proven wrong about.

Dumb to spin bullshit???

If I were publically know as a "google insider" and this disaster found everyone demanding information from me... What the hell are you going to say???

I agree and it bugs me too because it affects several of my sites also. I have a theory that it to do with the type and number of links. I have been doing some analysis not done yet but there is a difference between those sites that shift and those that do not during an update. I'll post my findings when I am done looking at several more sites.

 

In essence the site is very vulnerable.

One "myth" that this experiment has proven wrong (up til now) is that you must have relevant links.

99% of the links pointing to this page are NOT from sites having anything remotely to do with camping equipment.

If you remmeber back to the beginning of this thread, I origianlly was targeting the main page of my site with relevant links with appropriate anchor text.

BUT there were so many links with "uncontrolled" anchor text pointing to that page, I thought it an unsurmountable task to try and "turn it around". That is why I created a whole new page and went to great efforts to keep the theme pure.

If this has made the page vulnerable - I will take it.

BUT I will remind you that a great many sites have been effected in these Google Events and they most likely do not share the same linking strategies as the experiment page.

I agree with much of this. I think the page is vulnerable. But it was only learned subject to this experiment and your recording of data. In both the Feb/March update and this one the site has "bounced" more than some others (as you documented). (At least that is how I interpret this).

With regard to the "myth" of unrelated links....WOW.

I still suscribe to trying to get only related links. Regardless over the course of this experiment (especially last year/in fact about 1 year ago) this page soared in serps and allinanchor from (probably 99%) unrelated links with a single anchor text phrase.

If Google is beginning to stabilize...and the site reverts to "normal" rankings it will do so primarily based on the above factors.

As to the vulnerabilty question...the experiment is what it is...which can lead to further analysis. Based on your post here http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showpost.php?p=420054&postcount=2407 the experiment page bounced more than some of the other sites which were also adversely affected by the google update.

I find that intriguing and curious. My first guess is that it is because of the nature of the links.

I think I'll study this with my own industry/site and 2 or 3 competitors...then report back. It will take time...as I'm not a programmer.

My site and 2 others keep making progress on a couple of terms.

I'm going to pick out a site that is taking the worst beating with this latest update and see if I can spot some bl trends. Who knows.

Given the status of the page (back to normal), it may be interesting to introduce a few good links that are extremely related to the page and seeing if it bumps it in a more significant way - and how long such a benefit takes to occur.

 

How do you propose to do this? Your posts sound like you think we went out and tried not to find related or thematically similar sites from which to acquire links.

I still object to the "a few good links" remark. Caryl just said that the thing this experiment has debunked is the "relevant link" myth and then you insult our intelligence by calling "relevant links" good links.

Park your biases at the door and don't make any definitive statements like "good links" until you have a body of research data similar to Caryl's to support your position.

This site is currently in the top 20 as a result of almost no links from relevant pages. That makes these non relevant links pretty damn "good" in my book.
