Well, I guess since Google does have so many datacenters around the world, they could have a test infrastructure setup (like the "jagger DCs") where updates are shown and slowly rolled out to production DCs. So realistically, with such a dynamic task and infrastructure, I could see where we would, and even should when dealing with relevancy, have some DCs that didn't line up by design. This is all given that we know each and every DC IP (which I would guess there are many more out there we haven't even come across).

And going back to the Matt Cutts propoganda blog, to play devils advocate a bit, he may have been told by an engineer (or perhaps is on that very team)that the update is or has wrapped up, but they may not even know issues exist. I'm sure someone from Google has seen this thread, but their extent to following it probably isn't as keen as ours is.

 

Thanks. As I glance the report I notice as I scroll down that data centers progressively stop responding. In the beginning we have all data centers responding then as we go down more and more appear to stop responding . Why do you think that is? Might it contribute to what we see as "flux"?

Makes sense to me!

Many have already suggested that this thread contains more info and learning than any other webmaster source. I agree. In the grand scheme of things aren't we scratching the surface? What about the secret sauce? +150 factors that determine the results we all desire? If you can tell me half of them the check's in the mail .

At no time were the Datacenters "Not Responding".

There were a few times that the page was not found on some or all of the Datacenters, though.

As you scroll down the report you will notice that I have made some of the Position/Allinanchor info a hyperlink.

These hyperlinks take you to infomation or forum discussions regarding something going on at Google at that time. I started inserting the hyperlinks so there would be information to help explain the report.

An interresting side note - You will notice that in July/August 2004 the page dropped like a rock then right off of Google. At the time I discovered a caching problem. Once Google updated the cache the page came right back in the serps. It wasn't until 6 to 9 months after that, that happened to encounter someone who had experienced the same thing and I linked to his blog where he shared his email exchange with Google about the problem.

Large discrepancies across the Datacenters have always signified either an update and or a problem. (Some would argue they are one in the same )

Searching Google for...
site:www.mcdar.com results in 26,100 pages

Today the Google API reports 449 pages in the site?????

Just ponder for the moment what ramifications this sort of indexing could have on your site...

If the results of site:forums.digitalpoint.com+sleeping bags were actual links to your page and from one day to the next that could mean a difference between 2290 links or 409 links???

How do you think that would effect the results?

I'm just saying that this is not the sign of a stable Google!

The first one listed has the cache date of Aug 12, 2005 17:54:03 GMT

The second listing is the "REAL" page - now showing the "phantom cache date" Nov 9, 2005 08:11:11 GMT

So does Google count this as a duplicate page????

BTW - The Google API reports 3 pages for the same search

My site has about 2700 pages and google shows over 40,000. Been like that forever.

 

Definitely there's something amiss in the cache:
Searching for mayorga decaffeinated on google:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=mayorga+decaffeinated+&spell=1

Our site shows in the #4, and #5 spots. But the page doesn't have Mayorga coffee on it anywhere -- it's Folgers?

We do sell Mayorga Decaffeinated Coffee but not on that page. Not even a mention of it.

The page in the cache is from Oct 2004 and is show supplemental. It's still active on our site.

 

You see, when you start to look below the surface, you can see that there are some REAL ISSUES going on at Google!!!

Too many people barely look beyond there daily web stats/traffic!

They may "check in" to where their site is in the rankings but even then it is only a "spot" check. They have no idea were the site is across the Datacenters.

If folks actually started to RECORD info about their own sites they would easily be able to tell when something is WRONG.

I agree but any competent ecom webmaster KNOWS when traffic is down. Although the data center you are querying shows that you are well ranked, traffic sucks usually means that the other data centers are showing much different results. Because there are no real concrete guidelines that Google has to follow (accept there own) I am beginning to wonder if this will be ongoing...to provide entertainment for us . But it makes sense from Google's perspective, would this ultimately lead to more unpredictability and uncertainty .

Mentioned many times. The trend seems to be the more you scroll down the more DCs are reporting this. Not sure what to make of this .

 

I'm seeing lots of changes in my area...whereas I saw very little durng early Jagger and last Feb/march.

No wonder they called this Jagger. Ole Mick has been rocking for about 40 years. They must have known this roller coaster ride was going to last a while.

I've become skeptical. They remind me of the government. When things are going wierd and screwed up in one area they try and push a lot of other things and news to stay under the radar screen with the bad news.

Maybe that is why google.base and analytics came out at this time.

If you scroll down to February 1st, 2005 you will see the entry
**33 active DCs (6 new datacenters found)**

from that point on you see **33 active Datacenters**

This was due to the fact that Google discontinued using many known Datacenters and started using new ones. As we found the new IP addresses, they were added to the McDar Tools.

The "Phantom Cache Date" changed today to an even earlier "Phantom Cache Date"! - Oct 22, 2005 22:22:09 GMT

Today is the first time I have seen Google return different cached pages on different Datacenters.
