There is something real screwed up going on -

This morning, THIS THREAD is coming up in position #162 in Google for the search sleeping bags!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

while the experiment page is in the 400s.

This only re-affirms my suspicion that Google is missing information about the experiment page. The experiment page may not be THE most relevent, but I think it just might be a little more than this thread. Certainly this thread does not have relevent links coming from camping sites and such.

    Something is not right here...

    See my post here...

No, but this page is hosted on digitalpoint.com, which may be considered more of an authority site by Google(overall) and therefore rank it higher.

So - what are you saying? Site size determines authority?

Because Digital Point is so (what) makes it an authority on (everything)?

Dosn't this totally discount Google's supposed ability to determine relevance?

    Please elaborate, Derek

    I concur.

The symptoms I saw with my one site that was dropped by both Bouron (for 30 days) and Jagger (still...) appear more consistent with database corruption and data loss at Google than with any form of algorithmic change.

I think Google has wrongly put more precidence on numerous factors that favor large sites such as about.com, digitalpoint.com, etc. I think the change(s) Google made aren't taking into account that sites are usually only authorities on a handful(at most) topics, and instead it's giving a significant boost to big sites regardless. Very wrong, but based on the SERPs I've seen, this is what it seems-- expired Ebay listings, Craig's list, Digital Point forums, etc...

All of the off topic pages on my site have been hit hard by Jagger. These off topic pages were all mostly top 10 in G based on on-page content alone pre-jagger. Now they're all 100+ .

The on-topic pages are still mostly OK. I wonder if Google has decided my site is *not* an authority site and thus nuked all my off topic stuff.....it certainly fits the observations at my end...

Well I agree totally and I certainly cannot get thru my thick skull the fact that something that is totally around a page and its google position can be bumped off into....oh lets have a think of something more relevant....oh I know....Marketing...Yea ...Marketing ...great idea it fits perfuckedly

    Uhhh?

Marketing... I'm sorry are we selling something here?

    Oh well whatever :)

Obviously something was bugging someone about something

God only knows what that was!

All my off topic AND the on topic stuff got knocked out to 100+. Some have recovered somewhat a certain times during Jagger, but still not to anywhere near pre-Jagger levels, and one or two that are nearly that have far less traffic than they did pre-Jagger...

On the up-side, Yahoo must have finally reviewed my re-inclusion request for one of my sites, 'cause I'm ranking well in Yahoo for it again. Too bad there's still not a wealth of traffic coming from it yet... :(

I agree 100% Foxy. This is pretty shoddy treatment to one of the oldest and continous running threads on the forum. Not even in the right fucking category. I don't know what got up Shawn's ass, but it makes you think maybe it's time to move on to another forum.

I hate to tell you this, but I believe that Y is just showing old data, i.e., if you were good on Y around Oct 1, then you are good right now, if you weren't.....
Either Y has problems with its database, and is having to use older archived material, or it has reversed its last-month update. Quien sabe?

Can you give an 'executive summary' of the conclusions you have reached from the experiment so far?

Ummm.....you are out of order here Infiniterb

If you were aware of its history and who are the main suporters you might think differently

    Compar started this thread
    Caryl replied
and then I came along .... I think that was the order except you cannot see this thread in its entirety [that is how it started] now which was one of its graces

Oh and by the by, I still maintain a complex page of links for this experiment which takes considerable time, and I was member number 3 of this forum after Shawn and his mate WKW

Order has nothing to do with it. People are reacting as if they can't find the thread, or as if it's burried somewhere obscure. It's a little much, in my opinion.

And don't use the whole "I was here number 3, I have seniority" thing with me. That, also, is irrelevent. While I respect your contribution to the experiment, when you joined the forum doesn't matter.

All I'm saying is, why does it really matter where exactly the thread is? Should it be moved into the Google forum? Perhaps. It might also belong in the SEO forum. All that matters is that all parties involved are subscribed to the thread and it is easily accessible from your usercp (most people may not check that, but I find it vital so I know when threads I have responded to have had replies).

The experiment page continues to "bounce" around somewhat randomly in the 400s.

The cache date has reverted from the "Phantom" cache date of Nov 19, 2005 23:13:23 GMTto an even older "Phantom" cache date of Nov 09, 2005 08:11:11 GMT.

Nine Datacenters continue to show 559 pages indexed for the site while the rest of the Datacenters report 26,100 pages.

Google is still returning 3 different sets of results for the search.

    Caryl

    Shawn,

I would like to make an appeal to you to please re-join the thread so it remains in it's entirety.

The reason is that the original thread was really never about the tool, but rather what the results of the tool meant.

There was a natural progression in the thread that lead to the conclusion to actually begin a "NEW" page. That page has turned into the experiment it was not originally intended to be an experiment NOR was it ever intended that it would continue for over a year and a half.

Now, when new folks become aware of this thread/experiment - it is not suffice to encourage them to read the contents of this thread as it is missing THE REASON this whole thing started to begin with.

The value of this thread is NOT the experiment and it's results, per se, but more of a birds eye view of how Google has evolved in the past 20 months and it also exposes the vast number of uncontrolled (by webmasters) variables that effect the daily results which make it nearly impossible to determine a short term cause and effect relationship between SEO tactics and Google results.

So, please reunite the thread in it's entirety - PLEASE. It dosn't matter which category it is in but please leave it intact.

Also, one more little request - could you please change the title to something like "McDar Experiment" or "SEO Experiment" so this thread does not elicite competitve adsense ads or compete in the results with the experiment page.

    Thank you,
    Caryl

I can't agree with you on this one. I agree with Bob, McDar and Foxy. There was a certain natural progression to this thread as it was in it's original state and I can see why the main contributors are bent up about this.

Can the thread not be rejoined and title renamed, if necessary?

Bob, You sent McDar a link. Obviously you took it seriously. I have read this article and also wonder what the source of his information is. Regardless of that I find it VERY accurate based on my current situation.

It seems that much of what is being discussed is about the patent (BTW Mat Cutts is one of the inventors)

The one thing I can say is link strategies are going to have to change as we previously understood them.

I have seen no improvement in Google's results.

Still as unstable as previously reported.

The position reported for this page swings wildly from day to day across the Datacenters!

Example: The last 4 days on the 216.239.59.* Datacenters
    11/25/05 - Position #492 Allinanchor #108
    11/26/05 - Position #402 Allinanchor #107
    11/27/05 - Position #485 Allinanchor #100
    11/28/05 - Position #467 Allinanchor #102

This is the 6th straight day with the serps found in the 400 range and allinanchor found to be around 100.

Of note all of my terms for my various keywords have settled with consistent serps in all dcs. None of my terms or my industry experienced anywheres near the flux of the experiment page...and results started to flux after the 9/22 date.

It would seem that the impact of Jagger has been relative with some pages and some sites being more or less impacted based on certain criterion within the Jagger algos or filters.

If the experiment page retains these relative rankings for serps and allinanchor it renders the experiment moot insofar as the original intent was concerned and also moot with regard to results that were in effect throughout 2004 (or during 2004 as links to the site with anchor text had impact). The serp and allinanchor rankings have been consistently strong (excepting the Feb/March update) up to this period.

If the results remain consistent with current rankings now what?

    Dave,

An experiment that finds results contrary to the original hypothesis is NOT MOOT!

It has proven the original Hypothesis was incorrect OR proven the the design of the experiment would not provide adequate data to support or refute the original hypothesis.

This experiment has supported for more than a year and a half the value of anchor text PLUS the value of "irrelevant" links.

Google is NOT stagnant and therefore we must expect that values will change over time.

This experiment has documented such changes in Google with regard to links within the same IP C-Blocks.

It has provided evidence of what can happen when Google loses track of cache data as evidenced in July and August of 2004.

AGAIN - the value of the data recorded during the course of this experiment has had more value as, lets say, a Google Barometer rather than being THE answer to any one hypothesis or question.

Which current ranking would you like to speculate on?

The ones that say the site has 556 pages or the ones that say the site has 26,100 pages?

The ones that say the page is at position #398 or position #467?

Which of the three different sets of returned results for the keywords should we consider?

Maybe we should speculate as to why Google has been using old cache dates for the page for 16 days now?

I'm not trying to be glib but it is a bit like asking Dorathy how she plans to redecorate the house once it lands?

This has gotten VERY OLD to me as well. But, until I can see some semblance of normality in Google - I wouldn't have a clue as to what to do.

IF the page was in the 30s or even 100s I could accept that Google has re-valued links. BUT for the page to be bouncing around in the 400s implies there is something wrong or something missing.

I still believe the page will bounce back once Google has corrected the problem.
