It seems counter-intuitive that weak pages would randomly fluctuate to such "good positions" at all.

You'd think they would fluctuate from poor to nowhere and back, but not poor to good and back!

Would you agree?

I can show you results from two sites that have very strong anchor text/keywords that fluxuate exactly like that. In fact one of the sites keeps falling off Shawn's results altogether.

I know that only means that it isn't in the top 200 pages, not that it isn't in the top 10,000 as Shawn's tracker would seem to indicate. Nevertheless it is frustrating and annoying when in fact substantial work has been done to strengthen the keywords.

 

Yes, compar, didn't mean to imply it couldn't happen with strong keywords. But it seems to happen much more consistently with weak ones - at least for the 60 or so phrases I track.

 

I have something I can't explain.

I have a site that has absolutely no backlinks as it's a site I will develop later - I wanted to park it in G to avoid any time penalties.

Anyways, I thought I ought to pass somebacklinks to it so the pages don't disappear completely so I added it to my sig here.

That was a week ago and it has not been spidered at all.

This may explain something with your sleeping bags experiment - I have a theory on this but I need to test something else out first

Have a look at the post above and this may explain part of the reason. As I say I have a theory I'm going to test out today and let you know in a few days. I bet I can get my site spidered from a forum - but not this one (nor my own)

 

I hope I wasn't the one who laughed at you.

I am starting to suspect that sig links are of little or no value. Why don't you try putting the link to your site in the body of a message you post to this forum. Maybe content links still work.

My theory is that G ignores links where the word "forum(s)" exist in the URL.

I also had this site listed on another forum but the url did not contain that word. I assume I was spidered from there. I added it back today and I'll let you know.

That's why I think seochat is worth something - but nothing here - not even in the body (as I added into a body message last week and nothing)

So much for the improvement Foxy and I were seeing yesterday.

 

I tried to right click - view source on this forum to see if G could determine which text is content and which is sig by means of reading the html but it seems like source viewing is blocked. Is that done by Vbulletin, by Shawn or is it just me?

If G does discriminate between the two types of links than the only way to do so is by figuring it out from the plain html isn't it?

Weird but thanks, that is exactly what I wanted to find out.

I still can't view source, not in a fresh browser either, and on all other sites I can!

Anyway, with that <!-- sig --> comment, G could indeed filter them out if they wanted.

 

Well I added my link to the other forum that doesn't have "forum(s)" in the url and my site was successfully spidered yesterday - theory proved I think

The improvement in 'allinanchor:' is interesting. With the exception of the couple of extra links from my site, we are removing links not adding them. If these links were being indexed you would think that our 'allinanchor:' would be falling.

Let me be sure I understand your theory. You are not saying that pages from sites using "forum" in their URL are not being crawled and indexed, but only that all links from these pages are ignored. Is that correct?

 

There is something interesting in that more higher PR backlinks are being registered from the forum even though they have been removed from the sigs?! Not wanting to kick off another PR debate but perhaps the remaining backlinks are being given a greater significance?

How long have you had the link in your signature?

Please NOTE: Alek's PR7 link was removed on June 2, 2004 BUT it is still reported as a backlink to the experimental page 20 days after it was removed!

This would suggest that the new updated backlinks are NOT as current as we would like to think.

[edited: to add that I have another page that had 24 links just added yesterday. However, no new links where acquired to the page between this update and the last one on May 31!]
